In-stitute. The inspiration for this fund-raiser came from the passing of Charlotte Sorensen Mecham, the mother of the school's former for-mer vice-principal, Darrell Lynn Mecham. , The Student Government started out with a pizza sale where they ordered numerous boxes of pizza from Little Caesar's and Zubs donation of pizza. They sold these for a dollar a slice. After a week, they raised $650. . . . Immediately following the pizza sale the Student Government wanted to create the awareness of how cancer affects the students of the school. For each family member of the students that have been affected by cancer, a heart with their name was placed up on a wall in the schools commons area with the title of Leaving a ' Legacy. The hearts were placed strategically into a single heart formation. The big heart contains over 500 hearts with names of cancer can-cer victims. " To sum up the fund-raiser, jars were placed in each classroom for students to donate loose change. Jars were also placed at the entrance at the schools TjLWMnaiMHBQOMB with the Sprayed cn : UP U Bed Liner f 4 I I Ncn-sUJ, a, QMkPt - Frevet'ts rjti mmmmmmmmKmJt I ' ' '' 7 : ' " " "' $ I HcmmcATiS) MAILABLEy mm m -3 ; i fHl .JtIKV 5m'1 13s Valentine's bance where $300 was raised. Even though the jars werev originally origi-nally meant only for loose change, many students donated much more then their loose change. The teachers of the school also donated a lot of money to this fund-raiser. As the final piece, the Student Government held an assembly dedicated to the presentation of the money to Mr. Mecham. Mrs. Peay, a teacher at Mapleton started by setting set-ting the tone. She told the students to be quiet, then had the pledge of allegiance al-legiance given by Jessica Bills, the daughter of a soldier sol-dier in Iraq. Mr. Wyatt, who teaches health, Geography, and Student Government, told about his own fight with cancer. After they both spoke, the eighth grade representatives presented the check worth $1500. This has been a great fund-raiser for the school and for the student of Mapleton Ma-pleton Junior High. We hope as the Student Government Gov-ernment we have touched the lives of those who have been affected by the horrible hor-rible tangles of cancer. 833 S. 170 E.
