Editor: My husband and I had a recent discussion about car booster seats. Was our son old enough to not use one? (He'll be 8 at the end of the month.) I tried to remember the weight recommendations; my husband hus-band thought there was an "age" guideline. The following is what we have learned about car-safety car-safety restraints: Infants should be placed in a rear-facing child safety seat until they are at least 20 pounds AND 1 year of age. Children over 1 year of age weighing 20 - 40 pounds should ride in forward for-ward facing child safety seats (NOT booster seats). Older children (approximately (approxi-mately 4-8 years of age) should ride in belt-positioning booster seats until they are 80 pounds AND fit an adult -size lap and shoulder shoul-der belt system, typically requiring a height of 4'9." (See http:www.carseat. orgBoosters630.pdf for a 5-step test to determine if your child is tall enough for a seat belt). Avoid using secondhand second-hand child safety seats especially es-pecially if it does not have the original instruction booklet, if it has been used in a crash, if it does not have the manufacturer's date and model number on it or if it is more than six years old. - If your car has lapshoulder lapshoul-der combination belts, it Springville Herald 269 E.400 South Springville, UT 84663 An edition of The Daily Herald a Lee Enterprises, Inc. SHS Baseball Team could be critical to use a locking clip to properly secure your infant's safety seat to the car. Consult the vehicle's owners manual. The safest place for any child under the age of 15 is in the back seat, even when a vehicle has "smart" air bags. Utah law requires ALL occupants of a vehicle to be wearing a seatbelt (or carseat) when traveling. travel-ing. Children age 4 years and under must ride in an approved child safety seat, and youth aged 5 to 19 years must ride in an approved booster seat or seatbelt (once proper height is reached). Law enforcement officers can stop a vehicle in which children or youth are not properly restrained. (See http:www.utcodes.org We in Utah love our children! That's why we obey this law, right? Or do we? "Studies report that between 73 and 75 of child restraints are improperly improp-erly .installed or used, and 83 of children between the ages of 4 and 8 are inappropriately in-appropriately restrained in adult seat belts rather than child safety seats. 'That's a serious problem because children ages 4-8 are four times more likely to suffer a serious head injury while restrained in a seat belt rather than a booster seat. In fact, more than 90 of children ages 4-8 who The Springville Herald Customer Service 375-5103 5 489-5651 I Fax 489-7021 239 L 400 S. This week we learned that Mapleton Elementary was one of 12 schools chosen in the state to win the JAZZ Reading Contest. That means that the young people at Mapleton Elementary read and read from a JAZZ player! In January we published a story about Sage Creek Elementary. El-ementary. Pam Tippctts, a sixth grade teacher, and Nata lie Call, principal, were honored by the Utah Council of International Reading Association as tiementary Heading Head-ing Teacher and Principal of the Year! It was the first time these awards have gone to the same school. Call said that Tippetts was an example to students and staff alike of the value and importance of literacy in all aspects of every day life. Tippetts said that a priority of Call is to instill in students a love of reading and writing, and that she models her own love of books in her teach er's classes. Call shows literary leadership Tippetts said. Reading is fundamental especially to the success of ger to learn. We salute these examples of helping chil dren to read better and to all the other schools in Springville Spring-ville and Mapleton who are doing so much to create as positive literacy impact. Teachers can't do this alone. They also need parents to help their children to be better readers. Parents can do simple things to put their young people on a path to reading success. The most important thing is to show an example of loving lov-ing to read. Do your kids see you reading newspapers, magazines and books, and do you discuss what you read with them? Do you have a reading area in your house that has comfortable furniture, good lighting and lots of books? Make reading an activity. Take your children and visit the library. Let them check out books and maybe attend story time. When at home set aside time to read as a family at least once a week. Talk to your kids about what they are reading read-ing so that they know you are interested. Read to them, especially the young ones. Help young people write a story to read to the family. Subscribe to magazines for young people and read with them. Let children know how you use reading in every day life like when you cook or read street signs or directions for something. We want all children in our community to succeed. Reading will put them on the road to success. Statistics show that students who read below grade level are twice as likely to drop out of school then those who can read at grade level. Reading is easy when children have things to read. were seriously injured were not in a booster seat." (From Partners for Child Passenger Pas-senger Safety, 1998-2000, as quoted at http:www. safedrivingtest.com morerestraints.html) As parents or caregivers, we would do everything in our power to prevent our children from taking drugs which could seriously seri-ously damage their brains. Yet we ourselves put them at grave risk for such brain damage (90 like Mapleton police report Mapleton police had 62 calls last week including eight for animal problems. prob-lems.
