On February 28, the Springville High School Philharmonic Orchestra performed in a national contest against tough competition. They headed head-ed to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in high spirits after working so hard to perfect their program. This competition, sponsored spon-sored by the American String Teachers Association Associa-tion (AST A) was really a big deal. Sixteen schools from all over the country came to show the judges how well they could play; and many of them were private schools. There was a feel ing of importance for all of these students, to be invited in-vited to this national convention; con-vention; everyone played their best. It was a long 12-hour bus ride, but it was worth it to perform for such a prestigious occasion. Students Stu-dents visited many sites before playing on Friday, and enjoyed the city of Albuquerque while preparing pre-paring for a national debut. de-but. When the time finally came to play, the students were ready. Being the last ones to perform, it could have made them a bit sluggish, but they worked through it. Springville High Philharmonic Phil-harmonic Orchestra pre- v0. sented a stunning program pro-gram which included the "Unfinished Symphony by Schubert" and "Pictures at an Exhibition," by Mussorgsky. Musso-rgsky. The audience gave Springville High a standing stand-ing ovation after the last note rang through the air, and the judges really enjoyed en-joyed what they heard. Springville came away with a second place finish in the Symphony category, catego-ry, and received an overall over-all Excellent Rating. The students felt that it was an amazing experience. experi-ence. One student commented, com-mented, "I feel that was the best we have ever played!" Congratulations SHS Philharmonic! ' 4 tJii The Springville High School Cheerleaders just returned from competing in the national competition, Contest of Champions, in Orlando, Florida. They took fourth place in level 5, which is the hardest level. The competition had participants from 36 states. The cheer squad thanks the community for their support and involvement with all of the activities at the high school. Jr. D'Velles are back! Jr. D'Velles is a great fundraiser fund-raiser for the SHS Drill Team and a wonderful dance opportunity for girls up to 15 years of age. The Springville Philharmonic Orchestra went to Albuquergue and performed for a local elementary school in preparation for performing at the National Orchestra competition last week. "You Can't Take It With You" Bryce Frisby and Austin Moss SHS STAFF WRITERS Springville High School's Drama teacher Ms. Sellers Sell-ers is directing the original origi-nal Moss Hart, George S. Kaufman play called, "You Can't Take It With You." Similar to "My Big Fat Greek Weddin," this play is about two families who don't get along very well. Having both families at each other's throat, the play is definitely entertaining. entertain-ing. "It's a classic, playful and filled with wit!" says directorteacher direc-torteacher Ms. Sellers.
