Show Shut out Lions tied Devils ah it by Sean Francis The Springville Red Devil football team, in achieving its fourth shutout in a row last Friday, set a new school record, won their homecoming game, and remained atop Region Six standings with a 4-0 record. The Devils won, 7-0 over the Payson Lions, and are currently in a tie for first place with the Timpview Thunderbirds. Springville will test Provo this Friday, with the game being held at Provo under the lights at 7:30. Payson opened the game by starting a sustained drive, and the Lions were only stopped when David Hiatt, Payson's quarterback, fumbled on the Devils' 30 yard line. Springville, pouncing on the opportunity, made use of two Todd Whiting receptions, a Ken Howell catch and numerous running gains by tailback Todd Tanner, and moved down to Payson's 12 yard line. Despite a 10 yard penalty and a near sack of Quarterback Mark Harding, Springville was able to place the ball on the 4 yard line, and Fullback John DeHaas scampered around the left end for the only score of the game with 18 seconds left in the first quarter. The Devils' defense, quickly gaining a reputation around the league for its great goal line stands, again lived up to its reputation, as they allowed Payson to drive all the way to the one-yard one-yard line before putting the plug on the offensive charge. Two long passes by Payson's Hiatt and a 20-yard running gain by Jeff Carlyle spearheaded the drive, and after Hiatt hit Benson Tommy with a picture perfect pass over the middle to the nine, the Devils seemed to be in a hole. But once again, the Devils held. John DeHaas and Todd Whiting combined com-bined to make a spectacular spec-tacular hit at the three-yard three-yard line, setting up a fourth and three situation. Carlyle, Payson's speedster, sprinted around the left end, and was seeminly easily in for the touchdown. touch-down. But up came safety Mark Harding, and laid a bruising tackle on Carlyle, stopping him some six inches from the goal. This heroic stand took place just before halftime, and was indeed the most pivotal factor in the outcome of the game. Springville should have had another touchdown in the third quarter, but lack of concentration on a beautiful Harding spiral prevented the ball from being caught, and six points, although not important in the final outcome, were lost. Springville also penetrated twice more inside the 20-yard line of Payson in the remainder of the game, but both drives were blocked by Payson's defense, certainly cer-tainly not weak either. Todd Tanner had his finest game of the year at the tailback position, becoming the first Devil to rush for 100 yards. He gained 100 yards on 22 carries, and the offensive line should take much credit, for the holes Todd had the privilege to run through were at times huge. Payson, in the waning moments of the game, very nearly scored. They intercepted a Mark Harding pass on the 50-yard 50-yard line, and on the next play Robert Hogen sn-tached sn-tached a Hiatt strike over the middle and dashed to the 20-yard line. Payson, however, pressured by a surging Devil defensive line, fumbled the ball for a 19-yard loss, and on the next play, they again attempted the identical pass to Hogan. This time the ball was slightly overthrown, though, and Harding picked it off, ending all hope for Payson of breaking the Devils' unbeaten and unscored upon skein. The State Forester along with the Regional Forester ask for the public's cooperation in using fires safely for the remainder of the year. Hiatt.
