Mclntire General Manager, Carnation Research Laboratories Q: Now that summer is nearly near-ly over, I've cut down on my activity level and I have already al-ready started to put on pounds again. How can I lose weight and keep it off throughout the "indoor season? sea-son? A: Don't despair de-spair - you're not alone in your frustration frustra-tion with the "indoor" season sea-son and the seemingly inevitable in-evitable extra pounds that it brings! Fortunately, the solution solu-tion to your vexation is known and, surprisingly, not too difficult diffi-cult to follow. The lack of activity which often accompanies a farewell to summer adds up to extra pounds unless the food intake correspondingly is reduced. The only way to lose that excess weight is to reduce your food intake so your calories are less than the energy you need to "burn up" through your lower level of winter activities. In other words, the extra energy you need will be supplied by the excess storage of body fat which has begun to show itself. Instead of trying to devise two separate eating patterns for you, one for summer and one for winter, it makes more sense to devise a plan that will carry you slimingly through the entire en-tire year. To begin, you'll need to take a closer look at your ' eating habits. There is more to food than calories; your diet should furnish the vitamins, minerals, proteins and other nutrients needed to keep your body in good working condition. That means you need to select a well-balanced well-balanced diet from a variety ) of foods, and eat everything in moderation. A reliable guide is to select foods from among meat, poultry or fish, green leafy vegetables and fruits, dairy products and grains and cereals. Look for low-calorie high nutrient foods in each of these groups. It's a good idea also to eat less food more often throughout the day. ' When your activity level begins be-gins to lessen, you'll still need just as many nutrients but fewer few-er calories. Yet, researchers have found that it's necessary to maintain a certain minimum calorie level to supply the needed nutrients from food. The solution to your "indoor" season syndrome can be found quite simply with a formulated instant diet food for weight control, con-trol, such as Carnation's Slender. Slen-der. By substituting this for one or more regular meals, you'll be able to take off excess weight initially, and then to control your weight. This method of calorie control will get you back in shape quickly and safely safe-ly whenever you need it, and it will help you to enjoy winter just as much as summer. Along with this selective diet pattern, try to make exercise and fitness a part of your life pattern year-'round. Long hours spent in strenuous exercise are not necessary to keep weight under control; a few minutes of simple exercises each day plus frequent walking do wonders for a successful and enjoyable long-term weight control program. Q. What are triglycerides? A. Loosely speakirfg, triglyceride triglyc-eride is another word for fat. The fat in our foods and in our bodies is primarily a mixture of a variety of triglycerides. During Dur-ing digestion, food fats are broken down into their component compo-nent parts which can then be recombined to form the triglycerides triglyc-erides characteristic of our bodies. bod-ies. The body also synthesizes fat from carbohydrates especially espe-cially when caloric intake is higher than calorie expenditure. Several hours after a meal that contains fat, the triglyceride level in the blood normally rises and then gradually drops. In some individuals, however, the blood triglyceride level is continuously high. This tendency tend-ency may be inherited and is sometimes linked to obesity, diabetes, and coronary' heart disease. Continuously high blood triglyceride levels are . most likely to occur with a high calorie diet that is rich in carbohydrates carbo-hydrates but low in fats. Ironically, a diet that is moderately mod-erately high in fat but restricted in total calories is used to treat a continuously high triglyceride level in the blood.
