You probably know that animals ani-mals are divided into different groups based on their characteristics. charac-teristics. For example, a few of the groups include the mam mal group, fish group and bird group. The reptile and amphibian amphib-ian groups are two other groups of animals, but many people are confused about what make these two groups of animals ani-mals different. There are 8,240 species of reptiles. They include animals like turtles, snakes, alligators, crocodiles and lizards. Lizards are the largest group of reptiles, rep-tiles, and include more than 4,500 species. The smallest rep tile is the dwarf gecko: it is less than an inch long! The largest larg-est is the saltwater crocodile: it can weigh more than a ton. Most reptiles lay eggs and the eggs have a thick hard shell so the baby reptiles are protected. Reptiles are covered with dry scales or plates and have claws on their toes. - There are more than 5,500 species of amphibians. Frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts are all amphibians. The word amphibian comes from the Greek language and means both lives. Most amphibians are born in the water and have gills and no legs. As they grow, they develop lungs and grow legs. This is called metamorphosis. metamor-phosis. Once this happens, they live on land. If you think about a frog, it starts out as a tadpole that is born in the water, then grows into a frog that lives mostly on land. Amphibians have moist, smooth skin and no claws on their toes. Like reptiles, amphibians also lay eggs, but their eggs do not have a hard outer covering, so must be laid in the water or in other damp places. Reptiles and amphibians do have many differences, but they share some of the same characteristics. Both are coldblooded cold-blooded or "ectothermic." Our bodies can keep the same temperature tem-perature (about 98.6 degrees) no matter if it is cold or hot outside. We are warm-blooded. In cold-blooded animals, then-body then-body temperature is determined deter-mined by their surroundings like the temperature of the water, ground or air. They have to cool off by hiding in shade or warm up by resting in the sun. Reptiles and amphibians amphibi-ans are also vertebrates, which mean they have a backbone or spine. Finally, most have a three-chambered heart. f ' m Find these words to the puzzle below! AMPHIBIAN KPflU FRto UZAW SNAKE KCK0 TURTLE INTERESTING FACTS... Leatherback turtles are the largest turtles. They can grow to be up to six feet and weigh 1000 pounds. Giant tortoises live on islands off Africa and South America. These turtles can live to be about 150 years old. How can you tell the differ ence between an alligator and crocodile? An alligator's lower teeth are hidden inside when its mouth is closed, but a croc's teeth show. Crocodiles usually have more pointed snouts, as well. Snakes stick their tongue out to pick up chemicals and very small things that are in the air. It then sticks its tongue in the roof of its mouth into what is called the Jacobson's organ. . This organ tells the snake's brain what is in the air. Four fifths of the world's snakes are harmless. Many reptiles including turtles tur-tles and crocodiles are male or female because of the temperature tempera-ture their eggs were in the nest. Hotter temperatures produce males, cooler produce females, and in-between temperatures can result in a mix of male and female. One third of amphibians are endangered.
