Memorial for vivtims of Trolley Square shooting uare oiieyaq shooting remembered "Everyone kept asking what they could do to help." These are the words of Margaret Best, event coordinator for last Saturday's benefit for the victims vic-tims of the infamous Trolley Square shooting. Best, a 20 year-old from St George organized orga-nized this event after the brother broth-er of a close friend was seriously serious-ly injured in the attack. . From 4 to 8 p.m., the Salt Lake community gathered at the north plaza in Trolley Square to share their grief and lend their support to the victims, vic-tims, the families of victims and the businesses affected by the recent tragedy. Just a few weeks earlier on the evening of February 12, shoppers and diners at the downtown center were terrorized terror-ized when 18-year-old Sulejman Talovic went on a gruesome rampage that left 5 people dead and more injured: Talovic was also killed in the incident. Saturday, as the plaza bustled bus-tled with people, it seemed as though the wounds of the shaken shak-en community were beginning to heal. Event supporters lined the small stage area to see local favorites like. The Refugees, the Better Life and superstar band Jericho Road, perform. There was also a silent auction auc-tion that included items from Trolley Square businesses such as Palmer's Gallery, The Next Big Thing, Down East Basics, Tabula Rasa, Rodizio Grill and Pottery Barn Kids. Cameo Beauty College held a raffle for coveted prizes like a facial or a pedicure, and Wells Fargo was on hand selling T-shirts. All proceeds from this event will go to the Trolley Square Memorial Account. " vice from 1992 to 2007. She was the clerk at the check-out desk for many years, starting out as a volunteer. "I went to work at the library because I love ' books, and I have loved working work-ing there," aid Womack. In recent years Womack has been : a processor, cataloging and preparing new and used books for circulation. , Beverly Merkley has been in the library from 1979 to 2007, for 27 years., "I have seen many changes. We used to keep the cards file alphabetically. We would put a library card in the envelope when the book was checked out, and file the book card alphabetically." When the book was returned, the process pro-cess was reversed; date stamps were used to mark both cards. It was all done manually and there were only two ladies at the desk. While still working as a circulation clerk, Merkley also began serving as a processor, pro-cessor, cataloguing, covering and labeling new books.' She worked at the circulation desk for 17 years and as processor for more than 12 years. "I have just loved it," she said. . Each of these women will be sorely, missed by the patrons at the library.
