She can see clearly now By Elizabeth Goode Express Writer "When Dinah flashes her eyes at you, don't miss the comer she's just operating like she did when she was young back in the late 1950s. And if she rolls her eyes, don't get the big head. She does that for all the guys," said the city maintenance men who were giving Dinah the once-over. Dinah, the pink Dinosaur at the east end of Main Street, has been sitting at that curve since 1998. She was moved there when they were taking down the Dine-A-Ville Motel and Diner, where she resided since the Millecams special-ordered her from Young Brothers Signs in 1959. When the motel property was up for sale in the 1990s, there was a stipulation that Dinah would not be destroyed. Glade Allred had been wanting to enhance the triangle at the curve, so when Ken Bassett, City Manager, asked him where Dinah could go, he had the answer: right at the corner cor-ner where Dinah could attract notice to the view of Split HRMMiBMMWUHU.i..j' .. . 1 KJ.Jft.LJii!U.pjl.l.,J...4..l ..J" Il.i.mPfJtW !-'UML'I'WSlk- ' .11,1.1.1.11 '. . ... 4 II A V 1 A Everyone who has had their eyes examined knows how Dinah felt when Danny Anderson performed the operation on her. After a time, her hands held a sign to welcome visitors, "Vernal Utah's Dinosaur Land." Today Dinah has brand new eyes sparkling in the sunlight, moving to watch the traffic, and like the lady she is, her eyes light up at night. Her coat needs to be refurbished, but cosmetic work has been done, and she gives the "come-on" to everyone, whether headed east or west. Worikiimg to rad cycle of child abuse By Mary Bernard Express Writer "Success is usually determined deter-mined right up frontSuccess is when CPS's Child Protective Services first encounter with a troubled family situation is the last, and you never see the children chil-dren again," says Matt Watkins, Associate Regional Director of the Department of Human Services Ser-vices - Division of Family Services. CPS exists to investigate reports re-ports of abuse and neglect of children. Services include assistance as-sistance to children and families fami-lies in their own homes; assist in the placement of children in foster care, if needed; assist older children in foster care to make the transition to adulthood; adult-hood; and assist in finding adoptive adop-tive homes for children when required. Watkins's gentle demeanor de-meanor belies his passion for helping children in troubled circumstances. He notes, "We exist to protect the children." As simple as that : According to Watkins, child abuse and neglect are illegal, but "it's the teachers in our community com-munity who are the children's . first line of defense. They are the ones who see things. They know the kids best and contact us when something isn't right" ' Often the teacher initiates contact by making the first referral re-ferral to CPS about a child in See Abuse on A12 1 tt Exit Realty Professionals 1285 West Hwy 40 Vernal, Utah 84078 (435) 789-EXIT (3948) 1,225 sq. ft home with 3 bedrooms, 1 34 bathrooms.
