Al Gore -v - . j Mr. Gore Energy should be on everyone's every-one's mind these days. India and China are becoming serious seri-ous competitors for energy, with their booming economies and huge populations. The DOE (U.S. Department of Energy) reports that our oil imports are averaging about 8.9 million barrels bar-rels per day. This is more than half of the oil we use (some say close to 60 percent). And 98 percent per-cent of our vehicles depend on these oil products. OPEC, which controls the bulk of the world's oil, includes (among others) the nations of Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Indonesia, Libya, Algeria, and Nigeria. All of the nations listed above pose problems prob-lems for America, either being outright hostile to us, or being very shaky politically. Even President Bush has compared the U.S. to an oil junkie, with OPEC as the pusher that wants to keep us hooked. Mr. Bush has made the Vernal District BLM a "pilot project," to extract as much oil and gas as possible as quickly as possible. pos-sible. This in spite of the fact that increasing domestic oil production pro-duction won't decrease gasoline prices appreciably, because oil is an international commodity and the price is set on the world market. At any rate, this has created serious Impacts for us all, and the economic positives it creates won't last The Uintah Basin's boom in drilling will inevitably peak, level off, and then drop. Whether it will end with a "bust" or a long whimper is not as important as the fact that it WILL end. We will simply run out of our non-renewable fossil fuels. and Energy Against this backdrop, it should be a top priority for all Americans to examine their lives, and see how energy-wasteful, or how energy-frugal, we are being. It is the patriotic thing to do. This is a no-brainer, nonpartisan non-partisan issue. And it is in our self-interest; personal reduction in use saves us money, reduces demand and lowers prices. Al Gore, the major national spokesman for addressing our energy problems, is now being accused of being an "energy hog," by using far more energy than is reasonable. Whether his critics are correct or not, if he is smart, he will showcase his life as an example to the nation. After all, if Mr. Gore is right, then this is mostly about people educating themselves. This is a rare opportunity to show the nation and the world how we can conserve energy, save money, and lower greenhouse gases, all at the same time. Americans (perhaps including includ-ing Mr. Gore) have become oblivious to where their energy is coming from. All borriirceSf we -have flicked on Ughtiwithout considering where that eleritrici-ty eleritrici-ty is coming from. We have filled our gas tanks, and rarely do we get beyond wincing at whatever what-ever price we are paying. If Mr. Gore's situation gets people talking talk-ing about compact fluorescents, electric cars, energy audits, and "carbon footprints," then his public discomfort may serve a far greater good than his appearance appear-ance at the Oscars ever could. Our action, or lack of action, is going to shape the world for our children, and our children's children. fV.jf ASSURM3T Flexible, Multi-Option Health Individual Medical Insurance With Assurant Health, you get the experience and expertise of a trusted toady that works closely with you to customize a health insurance plan that meets your needs and fits your budget You'll have: Wide range o( plans and features - buy the coverage you need.
