Show Yeilldl LALJiebb library internet speed will increase A new upgrade for the internet inter-net connection in the Uintah County Library will be completed com-pleted by the third week of January. The County Commission approved funding for an Ether-Gig Ether-Gig line to replace the fractured frac-tured (shared) T-l line now in place. Through the federal E-Rate E-Rate program, 70 percent of the $18,000 cost will be returned to the County, and monthly costs will actually be less than current cur-rent rates. "The speed will be 20 times faster than the present line; it is as fast a line as you can possibly possi-bly run," commented Dr. Frank Bruno, Library Director. "It is as fast as that of the Uintah Schools, but allocated only to the Library." The Dynix System is also becoming more stable. Debt collection will be possible by the end of January, and best seller lists should be operational. opera-tional. Dynix System did beta testing of the system at the Uintah County Library, and in February the system will be a candidate for release to other libraries. Being a test site has caused much frustration but it made possible a considerable consider-able cost savings for the system upgrade. Janice Noll's homeroom adopted two children and bought and wrapped the gifts themselves. Junior high gives generously Vernal Junior High students and staff reached deep into their pockets this year, raising rais-ing close to $2,000 to adopt four families through Santa's Community Com-munity Effort. Various classes and individual teachers adopted ten children from these families and bought gifts and clothes for each. Students in Susan Holmes's study skills classes pooled their money together to buy a Diamond Dia-mond Back Venom bike for a 14-year-old boy. Troy Lupcho, owner own-er of Altitude Cycle in Vernal, sold it to the students at cost and paid for the sales tax himself. Janice Noll's homeroom alone gave about $300 worth of money and gifts, and one student purchased pur-chased a Build-A-Bear to give using her own money. Several other teachers adopted children themselves. Noll, who organized the project proj-ect at the junior high, said she was really impressed with the school's teachers and students who gave generously of their own personal money. She said all ten children were adopted on the first day. Each child was supposed sup-posed to receive two toys and two clothing items, but most will be given more than that. Noll said that the project is also a good way to teach students aboutlhe value of giving. "School is not just about learning facts," she said. "We also have the responsibility to teach our students how to be good citizens." This was the first year the junior ju-nior high participated in Santa's Community Effort, and based on this year's results, the school plans to adopt more than four families next year. Presents will be delivered to the families this weekend. UNICEF collections made by local children Using a new twist, collection for UNICEF was conducted in late November by the children chil-dren and friends of Kingsbury Community Church. The youngsters gathered in the Community House kitchen kitch-en on Friday to make cookies, cook-ies, which they delivered on Saturday as they made their rounds to interested families. Giving treats was a special loving lov-ing touch enjoyed by the all of the participants. The treaters even made a visit to someone who was hospitalized. "It made my day to have all those shining shin-ing faces around my bed," the friend commented. More than $200 was collected by this group for UNICEF, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. On Dec. 12, in New I York, the lights of the Empire : State Building were cyan blue I in honor of that anniversary jUNICEF works for the survival, development and protection of children, guided in its programs Sby the Convention on the Rights 'of the Child.
