Prolonged exposure contributes contrib-utes to disease and premature death in children and adults. Secondhand smoke contains more than 43 cancer causing agents and many other toxins, including formaldehyde, carbon car-bon monoxide, and arsenic. Residues of these toxic chemicals chemi-cals rest in the air to be inhaled by the nonsmoker even hours afterward. The negative health effects of secondhand smoke vary. For example, among married couples where one person smokes, the increase risk of heart disease rises to as much as a 60 percent. Other debilitating debilitat-ing health effects include cancer, can-cer, respiratory infections, and asthma. It is estimated that, in the United States, secondhand smoke exposure results in hospitalizations hos-pitalizations of 7,500 infant and 15,000 children due to lower respiratory tract infections. Nationwide, secondhand smoke may contribute to over 50,000 non-smoker deaths every year. More than lung cancer and heart disease in smokers, secondhand smoke jeopardizes the health of small children. Studies suggest that the rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) rises with exposure to secondhand smoke. If parents par-ents smoke around their children, chil-dren, the children can inhale the equivalent of 102 packs of cigarettes by age five. Older children exposed to secondhand second-hand smoke experience a total of seven million more day's of missed school. Children who grow up with smokers in the family are more likely to have asthma by the age of six than children Living in non-smoking households. The rate of bronchitis, pneumonia, pneumo-nia, colds and other respiratory infections is four times higher in children exposed to secondhand second-hand smoke than those living in smoke free environments. Secondhand smoke is responsible respon-sible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in children under 18 months of age across the United States each year. The effect of secondhand smoke on the American workforce work-force is equally negative. Since 1999, 70 percent of the American workforce has been smoke free. These measures are responsible respon-sible for a concurrent increase in workforce productivity and decrease in absenteeism. By 2005, employers in at least nine states provide a completely smoke free workplace, including includ-ing restaurants and bars. TriCounty Health has Secondhand Smoke (SHS) packets pack-ets available for those who are interested in making their homes "SMOKE FREE." To learn more about these packets or if you have any questions on SHS you can call Krisha at TriCounty Health 435-788-6305 or 435-781-5471. TZ. 0 Last year "Helping Hands Christmas Eve Dinner" served about 200 dinners din-ners to people in need. 'Helping Hands' needs your hands About 100 volunteers from the community are needed this year to bring Christmas Eve dinner to those in need. Dec. 24 is the only day of the year that Meals on Wheels does not deliver, deliv-er, so a few years ago, Ashley Valley Calvary Chapel decided to step in with the "Helping Hands Christmas Eve Dinner." As a small congregation, however, how-ever, the church needs help from the community to make this happen. There are three areas where people can volunteer: donating food, making phone calls, and delivering meals. Fully-cooked turkeys, cans of green beans, rolls, and pies are just a few of the food items still in need. These must be dropped off at Western Park on Dec. 24 between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Dishes that need to be returned should be picked up between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Phone calls are made a few days before Christmas Eve to verify that people would like a meal delivered to them. Delivery of meals starts at 4 p.m. Dec. 24. Families and teams of at least two will meet at Western Park before 4 p.m. to receive instructions. Christmas Eve Dinner will also be available for dine-in at Western Park between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. An estimated 300 meals will be served this year, compared to 200 last year. If you would like to volunteer or know someone in need of a meal, call Chris Daggett at 828-0016.
