Talking with our Teachers By Janine Shannon Express Writer A few of Maggie Browning's third grade students stu-dents may be almost as tall as she is, but she is tall in other ways. Browning has a passion for teaching and a heart for students, especially third graders. Browning is in her twenty-sixth year teaching. teach-ing. After graduating from Southern Utah University, she took a break to raise her children chil-dren and ran a pre-school for a few years. She started her school career in 1981 teaching kindergarten kin-dergarten in Duchesne and then moved to Vernal a year later with the boom. She taught kindergarten for a year, and in 1983 switched to Davis Elementary, which opened that year. Browning taught fifth grade at first, and Dixie Allen, who was the principal at one point, joked that she had trouble spotting Browning amidst her students because of her height. After three years, Browning changed to third grade and fell in love with it partly because third graders love to learn. When the district reconfigured the schools, Browning transferred to Naples Elementary School so she could stick with third grade. This year, with the change back to neighborhood schools, she requested to teach at Davis again. Among other things, Browning teaches cursive, cur-sive, multiplication, and about South America. Browning enjoys teaching science and in studying study-ing South America, she introduces students to the Pacu fish, which is indigenous to the Amazon River. Students take care of the fish and watch them grow throughout the year. It doesn't stop at fish, though. Browning keeps all kinds of other animals in her classroom, class-room, including a bearded dragon, ball python, gerbils, turtles, and a hedgehog. She warns parents par-ents at conferences that she lets students take baby gerbils home after they are born. Any left over are fed to the snake, and students are given the option if they want to watch or not. The students, stu-dents, of course, love the critters. Browning gets her students excited about the subject material in other ways, too. Toward the end of the year, she sets up a town in her classroom and gives every student a job like a zookeeper or city manager. The students elect a mayor and each student receives a paycheck for his or her job. On free enterprise day, students make things to sell. As a result they learn about money, government, citizenship, and the importance impor-tance of keeping a job. "I've learned to love them into learning," she said. For Browning, teaching was an occupation her parents steered her into, but it really started with her grandparents who were both teachers. She was very connected to her grandmother and was only six years old when her grandmother died. Browning, in a sense, decided to carry on the legacy. Now, she says, being a grandmother herself has made her a better teacher. A long time ago Browning decided that if she wasn't having fun, her students probably weren't having fun either. That doesn't mean that Browning has lowered her standards, though. She sets goals and has high expectations for her students. In her free time Browning enjoys gardening, being outdoors, hiking, and reading. "Reading is my passion because I think you get so much enjoyment out of it," she said. She reads aloud to her students just as one of her teachers did in elementary school. Browning also finds joy in helping others. This year she, her daughter, and two girls working work-ing on their young women's projects decorated two trees for Trees for Charity. One, called "A Penguin's Paradise," benefited a girl with cystic cys-tic fibrosis and the other raised money for JC Lopez. I'-," ' .' ; . . . ; Now, Browning is preparing to move on.-With on.-With their four children out of the house, she and her husband are moving to Kanab, Utah, where Browning grew up. She will continue to teach there for a few more years before she retires. Although she is excited for the chan-aft Browning said sh ! Wednesday, December 20, 2006 A7 sad to leave Vernal, ti 1 |
