West. Of the many sites along the Green River which Mr. Jarvie could have settled, he chose this particular particu-lar one because of the naturally occurring river crossing. For years it had been used by Indians, fur trappers, travelers, and local residents. Jarvie figured it would be an excellent spot to establish a business. At its height, the Jarvie ranch operation included a store, post office, river ferry, and cemetery. Four original structures, each over 100 years old, still exist; the stone house, the two-room dugout, the blacksmith shop and corral, and the general store. Each year, the Jarvie historical site operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is a busy tourist spot where visitors from all over the world tour, but in December, the ranch takes on a special charm. Volunteers and staff decorate the ranch and trading post in great detail as a historical his-torical re-creation of Christmas in the 1880s would feel. Tours, live entertainment entertain-ment and refreshments are available for those visiting the site. The safest and most passable route to the Jarvie Historical site from Vernal in winter is most likely via Clay Basin. Travel on Highway 191 from Vernal for 55 miles to the Wyoming-Utah border, then east 22 miles on a maintained gravel road which includes two miles down historical his-torical Jesse Ewing canyon with grades approaching 14 percent. Once arriving at the bottom, you will then continue traveling trav-eling until coming to the first road to the ivce r- mHvai The old store and post office from the original Jarvie family is still standing on the homestead in Brown's Park. Visitors can take a peak inside to see the way the store may have been set up. Many families attend the holiday celebration at Jarvie Ranch year after year and enjoy making crafts and participating in activities from the past. right.
