Vernal City welcomes new police officer Vernal's boys in blue have a new addition to the force. Kiel Coomes, originally from Orem, has found his way to our fair city. Kiel and his wife collectively collec-tively have eight children, four of which will be living with them here. This is Kiel's first time working in the field of law enforcement. Coomes wife's best friend apparently is responsible for leading the family here. She saw the ad for a job opening with the city and the rest is history. Vernal City welcomes Officer Coomes to the Police Department. Gas price gouging suspicions increase After Hurricane Rita was expected to hit, gas prices were also suspected to raise once again due to the damage left in her wake. With many Basin residents res-idents driving the larger vehicles vehi-cles and SUVs, the price of filling fill-ing up at the pump has become one of even more concern over the past few months. Although Hurricane Rita went from a category five to a category three before coming com-ing ashore in the Gulf Coast, it seems that the effects may still be damaging enough for the country to face more pain at the pump. The Utah Attorney General's office is said to have joined with other states in an investigation investiga-tion of alleged price gouging, assigning one attorney from the state. The Utah State Commerce Department says it asked gas sellers for financial information informa-tion related to prices up to a few weeks ago and has yet to receive anything. It may need to issue a subpoena for the information in the near future. The Federal Trade Commission has also launched an investigation into evidence of price gouging. Some states have proposed gas price caps or suspending gas taxes, but Utah has not done so as of yet, and most likely will not. Bill J. Cuch Melynda Renee Farr ir 11 ! Green Sticker Gas Accord announced as winter nears Express Writer One of Vernal's most popular popu-lar traditions for both locals and tourists, the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, received an A on performance and entertainment entertain-ment value. At the last city council meeting, John Allred of the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo committee, com-mittee, presented a report to city council members. Allred reported that the rodeo this year attracted better and bigger big-ger local and national sponsors spon-sors along with much more professional cowboys and livestock. live-stock. Livestock for the rodeo was picked from four different breeders instead of just one as in past years, resulting in the best rodeo livestock available performing. Payout for this year's winners win-ners was $232,000 as opposed to the $104,000 when the rodeo began. Much of this was made possible because of the city's generous $30,000 donation towards the rodeo cause. 642 contestants participated for the prizes. Attendance at the rodeo was up 12 percent from last year. The rodeo was held for four consecutive days, and Allred reported that with the participation as high as it was, there may be a need for even more performance days next year. Allred was especially proud of the fact that out of 518 rodeos held at the same time of year, Vernal's Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo was chosen as a candidate candi-date for tour rodeo. Only 12 rodeos a year are selected for this honor. While it will be awhile until the results are officially in, just being selected was an honor. On docket for next year is a possible Mountain Man Rendezvous that would be a weekend event, more parking, and more grandstand and box seating. Vernal City Council said they would be willing to back the rodeo again next year. The Utah Department of Commerce announced the signing sign-ing of the Green Sticker Accord by all of the groups involved at a press conference recently in Salt Lake City. Using the first day of autumn to focus attention on the approach of colder weather and the need for Utah's citizens citi-zens to consider an inspection of their home's gas appliances, applianc-es, a licensed contractor with certification from the Rocky Mountain Gas Association will be there to conduct an inspection inspec-tion under the new Green Sticker guidelines. The term "Green Sticker" comes from the fact that after adjustments are made to a gas furnace and water heater a green colored sticker is readjusted. read-justed. This mechanical adjustment adjust-ment only needs to be made one time, but an annual safety inspection is something the press event will be stressing as well. Representatives from each group involved in the Green Sticker Accord Working Group will be at this press event. Those include the Utah Department of Commerce, Utah Division of Public Utilities, Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing, Utah Committee of Consumer Services, Utah Weatherization Program, Rocky Mountain Gas Association, Questar Gas Company, Utah Municipal Building Code Inspectors, Park City Building Code and Fire Marshall, and several of Utah's top heating plumbing and air conditioning licensed contractors. contrac-tors.
