Show Pall Winter 200? Discover Dinosaurland Dinosaurland offers cross-country skiers plentiful opportunity Northeastern Utah is a wonderful place for cross-country skiers to enjoy exploring the backcountry on the numerous trails marked and maintained by the Ashley National Forest. The Forest Service advises skiers to stay on established trails and roads, wear multiple layers of proper clothing, have a day pack with items such as fire starters, start-ers, a knife, a first aid kit, wide tape for repairs, and a space blanket. Skiers can defend against hypothermia hypother-mia by staying dry, out of wind and snow, and putting on warm, dry clothing before starting to shiver. Skiers should also stop before they become exhausted. It is advised to leave dogs at home because they can be a nuisance to other skiers or have the possibility of endangering wildlife wild-life as well as themselves. Also, dogs can damage groomed ski areas. Trails are marked by blue diamond signs on trees along the trails and are accessed via Highway 191 and 44 between Vernal and Manila. The following are a few trails maintained by the Forest Service: 1. Little Brush Creek Loop Trail Access: Route begins 22 miles north of Vernal (43 miles south of Manila) on Highway 191. A parking area is at the trailhead. Look for blue and white trail-head trail-head signs. MileageRating: Route is 2.5 miles in length with gradual to moderate ascent and moderate descent. This trail is best suited to novice and intermediate skiers. This trail is closed to snowmobiles and is marked with both blue signs and blue flags. Elevation is 8,000 to 8,500 feet. The trail is described as meeting at the junction junc-tion of Highway 191 and Little Brush Creek Road located on the west side of the highway. The trail follows the Little Brush Creek Road through a large rock quarry to the road's end. Along this first stretch, there are a few trees along the edge of the narrow canyon. The trail then ascends out of the rock quarry into Grizzly Hollow. As you are leaving the quarry, you enter timber tim-ber of lodgepole pine and douglas fir. The trail continues through the Hollow for approximately one mile, turn east for about 500 yards, then junctions with the Bassett Springs Cross-Country Ski Trail. To continue on the Little Brush Creek Trail, the skier must follow the flagging to the right. From this point, the skier will be able to see Highway 191. The trail parallels par-allels the highway from on top of a sage brush plateau paralleling the trees. Here there are some aspen mixed in with the pines. The trail then drops off the plateau through the pines back onto the road that will take the skier back to the trailhead. 2a. Bassett Springs Loop Trail. Access: Route begins 24 miles north of Vernal (41 miles south of Manila) on Highway 191. A parking area is across from the trailhead. Route begins across the highway, to the west. Look for the blue and white trailhead signs. See skiers page 13 "'III!
