Australia Continued from All In Australia, an animal trail is considered a road; two tracks a state highway, and if any road is graded or paved, it is an Australian freeway. American cars and trucks are non-existent; Toyota and other Japanese car makers have total market share. We spent our time in Toyota Land Cruisers. Indicate which team you think will win (do not need to pick score except for tie breaker). 2. Pick the tie breaker by writing what you think will be the final score of the tie breaker game. The tie breaker will count as a correct or incorrect pick during the initial scoring. Then, H needed the scores of the tie breaker will be used to break the ties as outlined in 6 and 7 below. 3. Games left blank will be counted os incorrect picks. If a winning team is indicated on the tie breaker, but no score is given, then the pick will be counted in the initial scoring, but will be given last place in the tie breaker determination. 7. Ties will be broken by using the tie breaker. The person with the smallest point differential between actual scores and predicted scores will win the tie breaker. If after using the tie breaker there it still a he, then whoever hod the closest score to the winning team will be the winner. K at this point there is a tie, then the 'pick the winner" points will be split among the tied contestants. not used, the consistent answer was that they will not survive the abuse of the outback. The Australians drive on the left side of the road and I never did get used to that system. The areas are so vast that they have what they call "road trains." These are huge trucks with four trailers that are amazing to see. Some are cattle haulers, haul-ers, fuel, freight, etc. Many of the roads only have one lane paved and it is in the center of the road. The road trains never move off the center of the road. When a car meets one, it must always yield to the side as the trucks roar by. Outback food is much the same as here, with more consumption con-sumption of meat. We ate buffalo buf-falo corned beef, tongue, deer, etc. I ate so much protein that my muscles became strands of steel! Kangaroo meat is consumed con-sumed and also exported. My outfitter didn't like it, but I talked to several people who thought it delicious. One person per-son said he ate kangaroo once a week. On the coasts, the seafood sea-food is widely available but expensive. Everything is expensive expen-sive in Australia, even though there is a 20 percent American advantage in the exchange rate. The native Australian aborigines defy description without violating politically correct language. When I first saw them, I thought "how could God be so cruel?" As can be expected, welfare practices and foolish government policies are destroying their native lifestyle and few work on stations as they once did. When asked why, they respond by saying: "Now we have sit-down money." White Australians are charming and friendly. Older citizens acknowledge that if it were not for the Americans saving them during WWII, they would be speaking Japanese. However, most do not like the present Republican administration adminis-tration and are not hesitant about saying so. The youth are influenced by American society, soci-ety, especially the movies and music. Examining the shelves of a small country store, as far in the outback as possible, I noticed Paul Newman's salad dressing and the store was having hav-ing a sale on Beatle hats. We visited Australian National Parks and other vast government lands. However, I saw nothing that would equal our national parks and monuments monu-ments in Utah and other states. Government land is, literally, owned by the government and is not considered belonging to the public, as is the case here in the United States. The public pub-lic cannot hunt on government land. All wildlife existing on private land is owned by the landowner and managed by him. This usually results in much better wildlife management manage-ment than is the case where the government bureaucracy must finance its own agency at the expense of the wildlife. In Australia, there are 25,000 species of trees and shrubs. That means that in most areas there is a far greater diversity of plant species than in most areas of the United States. It is spring there now and the blooming plants, shrubs, vines and trees is a sight that I shall never forget. In the next few weeks, I intend to write volume IV of my series of books: 50 Years of Hunting and Fishing. It should be available early in 2006. |
