(ABC) WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS THE MILLION Back in the '60s, in the days of the Chicago seven and the Catonsville nine, a bearded flower child, was asked what he thought of the upcoming Indianapolis 500. He is supposed to have said, "I don't know about them, but I'm sure they're innocent." What would the misinformed hippie think about a million? Today at Arlington Park, the Budweiser-Arling-ton Million V, one of racing's most prestigious international in-ternational turf races, will be run. You know it's a big race because it is followed by a Roman numeral, numer-al, like the Super Bowls and the amendments to the Constitution, and the broadcast has been lengthened from 60 minutes last year to 90 minutes min-utes this year. The race will be televised on NBC from 4:30 to 6 p.m., and that's Triple Crown length. The Kentucky Ken-tucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont are the only races that are allotted an hour and a half of TV time for a two-minute-plus race. The TV people were undoubtedly impressed last year when NBC's telecast that network has covered all the Millions so far was beamed throughout North , America and 23 countries around the world. It proved to be a truly international interna-tional race. The Roman numeral tells you this is the race's fifth running, and the recently retired and already legendary John Henry was involved in most of them. John Henry won in 1981, but an injury kept him from defending his title in 1982. The year after, in 1983, old John Henry came up a neck short at the wire, losing to England's Tolomeo. But last year, the 9-year-old veteran charged from off the pace and outran Royal Heroine for his second Bud-weiser-Arlington win. It also helped him win Horse of the Year honors for the second time in his career. NBC likes the race so much that It recently signed a long-term contract with the track to televise tele-vise the Million. The network wants to make sure that in the future, fu-ture, when someone uses the word million in sports, he's not talking about a big-league pinch hitter's annual salary. He's talking about a horse race, man. Dutch John; Jay W. Snyder, Lapoint; Ed Taylor, Vicky Taylor, Jensen; Gail A. Thomopson, Roosevelt, Jesse D. Van, Danny J. Norris, Vernal.
