Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, November 17-19, 2010 C-3 The Park Record KUED shows celebrate Lennon Two films explore the life and times of the songwriter Submitted by KUED This fall, as the world remembers John Lennon on what would have been his 70th birthday, and the 30th anniversary of his death, KUED commemorates the life of the music legend with two specials: "Masterpiece Contemporary: Lennon Naked" is followed by "American Masters: Lennon NYC." The turbulent and fabled career of John Lennon comes to life in the highly-praised performance of "Masterpiece Contemporary: Lennon Naked." The film portrays the tormented musician from the height of his fame to flashbacks of dramatic experiences in his childhood; from his romance with Yoko Ono to the breakup of The Beatles. "Masterpiece Contemporary: Lennon Naked" airs on Sunday November 21 at 10 p.m. During its UK broadcast, the Daily Telegraph applauded "Lennon Naked" as "the most ambitious Lennon drama to date," The Beatles' hometown Liverpool Daily Echo praised the film as "frivolous, funny, passionate, and emotionally powerful - just like the man himself." "Lennon Naked" tells the story of John's fitful encounters with his surprisingly likable father; his arguments with Paul; the financial turmoil at the Beatles' troubled record label, Apple: the collapse of Lennon's marriage with Cynthia and his abandonment of their son, Julian; John's return of an award from the Queen; and his and Yoko's hostile reception in England, which eventually drove them into exile. Throughout, John reacts with a quick wit that is cool, funny, cruel, and incredibly selfrevealing. "American Masters: Lennon NYC" takes an intimate look at the time Lennon, Yoko Ono and their son Sean spent living in New York City during the 1970s. The film airs on KUED Monday November 22 at 8 p.m. Following the breakup of the Beatles. Lennon and Ono moved to New York City in 1971, where Lennon sought to escape the mayhem of the Beatles era and focus on his family and private life. Most of the artists in the exhibition often paint on canvas - in some cases at a larger scale. What we see with the work on paper is a more intimate expression, but no less artful than the larger works. Some of the pieces of note in the exhibition are a series of monoprints from Betty Merken. Using geometric and classical proportions in her work, Merken creates abstract work that is minimal, yet very bold.
