Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, November 17-19, 201Q The Park Record A-12 OBITUARY WE WERE Erma Bellizzi Longtime Park City resident Erma Bellizzi passed peacefully Monday morning, Nov. 8. Erma celebrated her 99th birthday on Halloween with her family. Her wish was to live 100 years; she made it into her 100th year. She never considered herself old, always wanting to help the "elderly" Her love and kindness was felt by everyone who knew her. She touched many lives at all levels. She will be missed but not forgotten. She is survived by her children: Chuck Ballard and Bernadette Clahane of Park City; her grandchildren: John/Trish Clahane, NY, Ann/Pat Morgan, PC, Michele Lemke, NY, Kathleen Britton, PC, Denise/ Tom Travolina, NC, Scott Ballard, PC, Kristin Ballard, WY. and Jim/Tamara A portrait of Park City's greatest generation By Emily P. Beeson, archivist, Park City Museum What does it take to become known as the "Greatest Generation"? The Park City Museum is currently hosting "Our Lives, Our Stories: America's Greatest Generation," a traveling exhibit from the National Endowment for the Humanities that follows these American men and women from birth to old age. But who were some of the Parkites who belonged to this "Great" group? Born in the 1910s and 1920s, this generation often recalls the Great Depression as a time when everyone helped each other out. Their mothers and grandmothers had recently received the right to vote. Many have some memories of Prohibition, especially in Park City where bootleggers were a dime a dozen. Most vividly remember where they were on December 7, 1941. Park City native Jim Berry had just come in from cross-country skiing after ripping his jeans on some barbed wire when he heard the fateful news on the radio. When the United States entered World War II, work was easy to get in Park City mines because of national labor shortages. In their oral histories, Jim Berry and Dixie and Larry Hethke remembered the mines operating at full capacity. Older men with mining experience were drafted into the mines because metal production was critical to the war effort. ••: '!* Erma Bellizzi Clahane, PA; 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-greatgranddaughter. A celebration of her life was held on Sunday, Nov. 14, 6:30 p.m. at Mtn Vineyard Christian Fellowship, 1401 Kearns Blvd. PC. National Guard airmen to return to Utah PHOTO COURTESY OF THE POP JENKS COLLECTION AND THE PARK CITY MUSEUM Little did these football players know at the beginning of their 1941 season that Pearl Harbor would be bombed that December and eight of the thirteen would go to war. Housing was scarce. Berry recalled trains crowded with uniformed soldiers. Bill Sullivan, Carl Workman, Larry Hethke and Mel Fletcher were among the local boys who went to war, all in the Pacific. On the home front, Dixie Hethke remembered writing letters to servicemen with women's auxiliary groups. The town held aluminum and rubber drives and rationed rubber, gasoline, sugar, and meat. In her oral history, Lila Berry remem- bered, "Meat was rationed because it was during the war, so my mother would cook tongue because you could get tongue and liver and all of that without ration stamps." By the time local soldiers returned to Park City, the town had already begun to change. Most married, started families, and then had to move away to find work. Unlike the post-war boom that was happening across the nation, Park City and its main economic source - mining - struggled. Learn more about this remarkable generation at the exhibit's grand opening on Saturday, November 20. Exhibit curator Brian Horrigan will speak at the Kimball Art Center at 2 p.m. about weaving the greatest generation's stories into this interactive exhibit. For those who would like to support the exhibit's educational programming, attend the Sneak Peek on November 19 for $70. RSVP at 649-7457.
