Proposed realignment has Miners picking up top-flight teams By CHRISTOPHER KAMRANI Of the Record staff Park City High School maybe going from arguably the weakest region in 3A to being a cog in one of the strongest. The proposed region realignment throughout the state will come down to a final decision of the Utah High School Board of Trustees Thursday at 1 p.m. The Utah High School Athletic Association (UHSAA) is holding a public meeting tonight at 5 p.m. at its offices in Midvale for people who wish to make a last-ditch public plea for their respective schools. Don't count on Park City being one of those pleading. In the proposed realignment, the Miners will drop the likes of Carbon and American Leadership Academy, and gain powerhouse Juan Diego, old rivals Judge Memorial and Uintah and former 4A force Highland, which looks to be on the fast track down to 3A. PCHS athletic director Doug Payne is pleased with the soon-to- PROPOSED lEGiQM 10 lEllllGNMENT CITY SCHOOL WARE CITY WASATCH fOM Sait JUDGE "ki GO HIGHLAND Asterisks indicate newestteams in proposed realignment. be decision. Payne said in the proposed realignment every 3 A region would have seven teams, which would help scheduling nonregion games in the future in any sport-not to mention the skyrocketing level of competition. "The quality should rise with these additions." Payne said. Miners head football coach Kai Smalley is pleased with the notion that his team will gain some serious rivalries should the realignment go through. Smalley had already scheduled Juan Diego and Judge in his 2011 non-region schedule, and is happily on the prowl for replacements for those spots now. "It creates a good atmosphere," Smalley said.
