Some highlights included: • Hatch saying he is dedicated to repealing the health care bill, one of President Obama's top legislative victories. He called the legislation a "big-spending bill" and said Washington should not force Americans to buy health insurance. • The senator acknowledging, in retrospect, he would rather have cast a 'Nay' vote on the legislation that created the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which poured money into the banking system, in 2008. He said, though, the program was meant to ensure the country did not enter an economic depression and said much of the money has been paid back. • Hatch talking about the plight of conservatives on Capitol Hill, describing that there has not been a fiscally conservative Congress during his time in Washington. He said it is "always uphill for conservatives," but the Tea Party movement could someday bring fiscal conservatism to the Senate. • Hatch saying l*violent radical Islam" is the country's worst enemy. He mentioned the Taliban and alQaida as he spoke about American enemies. A person in the audience spoke about Sept. 11 conspiracy theories at one point. Hatch said he anticipates Mitt Romney will seek the Republican nomination for the White House in 2012, saying in an interview Romney "would be my preference." Hatch said in an interview with The Park Record Romney has not informed him of his political plans in 2012. But Romney, who helmed the 2002 Winter Olympics and owned a mansion in Park City until recently, has the background in economics that a president should possess, Hatch said. "I'm quite sure he's going to run," the senator said. Hatch mentioned his support of Romney while addressing the crowd, but it was a brief interlude during the remarks. Hatch: illegals growing marijuana in national parks Hatch said Mexican people are entering the United States illegally and then committing crimes, including, according to Hatch, cultivating drugs. He said some are setting up their operations in cherished places like national parks. "They're coming across and using our national parks and special land to grow marijuana," Hatch said. He also said there are millions of people from other countries in the United States who have stayed longer than their visas allowed. Many of them are hard workers, he acknowledged, saying they want to remain in the U.S. for their jobs. Hatch said the border between the U.S. and Mexico must be secured and told the crowd people of "goodwill" must reach an accord on immigration.
