CAFE £ Nashville's Best Come to Utah Alexa Wilkinson lakes a leading role Young fork CHy singer will light up Snow Park stage on Wednesday By MATT JAMES Of the Record staff Last summer, Alcxa Wilkinson sang at one of the Wednesday night concerts as the opener for Mary Beth Maziarz. This year, Wilkinson will have a show of her own. She will headline the Wells Fargo and Park City Performing Arts Wednesday Night Concerts series this coming Wednesday, Aug. 3. But the story of that show actually began when Wilkinson opened for Maziarz. After her performance at Deer Valley last year. Ten Orr, executive director of the Park City Performing Arts Foundation, contacted Wilkinson about playing in this year's Wednesday Night Concerts series. Wilkinson came and played for the Performing Arts Foundation board when it was auditioning for musicians for the series, and she earned herself a spot among the nine other performers this summer. While Wilkinson, who graduated from Park City High School this past June, has performed at venues around Park City since she was in middle school, she said this show would be a bit different. "It's not new, but it's exciting," she said. The concert represents a new step for her as a performer, she said. It will likely be her biggest crowd as a headliner. She said she saw the show as an opportunity. "I think that any time you get to perform," said Wilkinson, "you should take advantage of it." For her 16-song set, Wilkinson said she was planning to play three or four covers (including tunes from Shawn Colvin, Alison Krauss, Anna Nalick, and maybe James Taylor's, "Fire and Rain'1); the remainder will be original songs. She identified herself, firstand foremost, as a songwriter. But she hesitates to describe her musical style. "I hate genres more than anything," she said. "Kind of Michelle Branch mixed with Alison Krauss, maybe with a little bit of punk mixed in." Wilkinson said her musical career didn't start according to any plan or definite desire. She said it began when 2005 SINGER/SONGWRITERS Leslie Satcher THEIR HITS "/ Said A Prayer For You" T o n y M u l l i n S (Grammy Award) Al Anderson she first came to Park City in sixth grade and didn't immediately fit in. Then, she said she began to write poems. "I just started writing and writing and writing in my journal," she said. Eventually she began to put tunes to her poetry, and then one year at a summer camp, a friend wrote music for a few of her verses. "It just kind of took off from there," she said. Before then, she said she didn't even really know she could sing well. Since then, she has learned how to play the guitar and has written all of her own songs. But her strength is her voice. "I want to sing," she said, "really, that's the thing I'm good at." And she has hopes of making a career out of it as well. In the fall she will matriculate at the University of Utah, but she said she's aiming to move to California in the spring to try and take another step as a musician. She said she has been working closely with BMI, and this past January at Sundance, she had a chance to spend some time with Vanessa Carlton and some other musicians. Wilkinson cited Michelle Branch as her biggest musical influence, but she said that Carlton was her biggest inspiration as a person. Despite her fame, Wilkinson noted how grounded she has remained. "She's just so real," WiLkinson said. "It's weird how real she is." Wilkinson said that no matter what happens, she wants to retain the same sort of real-ness that Carlton has. She wants to remain, she said, down-toearth. Her choice for her ultimate career reflects that. She noted that while she , loves singing, making songs is her" favorite part. "If I had to pick a career," she said.' "it would be songwriting." So to see where that career is. beginning one might make the trip up to Deer Valley this Wednesday. At the beginning of the season, Orr said it. would be a show worth seeing, and Wilkinson seems to have all the tools to make it so. Alexa Wilkinson will appear at Deer Valley Resort's Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater on Aug. 3 as part of the Weils Fargo and Park City Performing Arts Wednesday Night. Concerts. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, visit uitiv.ecclescenter.org.
