New coach back on home turf Former South Summit player, coach, returns to lead the Wildcats By NICK MCGURK Park Record Intern Jerry Parker cradles a football, tosses it into the air, and catches it, all the while looking up at die stadium bleachers that tower over South Summit High Schools new football Geld. "The stadium used to be packed," he says, standing near the 50-yard line with a tired smile. "It's different now. Hopefully we can get them back." Parker, 45, who is taking over for nowretired Gary Walker as South Summit's head football coach, speaks of a time before this, Geld had its state-of-the-art turf, its new stadium bleachers-in short, its new look. "Back then, we had the worst Geld," he says. "Now, this is the best field in Utah." But back then - when Parker played running back and linebacker for South Summit's stale-qualifying team - it probably wasnt the Geld that really mattered. "We never lost to Park City," he says, chuckling. How things have changed. South Summit, a 2A school with roughly 400 students, now pales in size to Park City, a 3A football powerhouse whose student body totals about 1,200. Parker would like to see a team of 100 at South Summit - and 10 years ago, it would have been the case, he says. This year. though, 90 have signed up, and only about 60 of those have actually contacted him about playing. The Wildcats have 15 seniors on the team, and only six of them are returning from last year's varsity roster. Still, Parker might just be the man for the job. Born in Woodland, about seven miles south of Kamas, Parker has lived in the area for most of his life. He student-taught at South Summit in 1984, and by 1991, he was assistant football coach. From 1992-1994 he held the position of head coach, and after leaching - but not coaching - at South Summit in 1995, he left for Granger High School, whore he taught and coached until this year. Even while teaching at Granger, lie made the lOS-inile round trip commute from his home in Woodland. Naturally, then, lies glad to be home. Especially because it means he can teach and coach. "It's a lot better when you're around the kids," says Parker, who will teach math, phys- ical education, and weight training. "This is" what I wanna be doin' for a while." When he played in high school, two of hiscoaches. Thorn Crittenden and Kent Frazier,! made a huge impact on liim. Parker says.' Because of them, he wanted to coach. It all started when her orthotics gave her blisters. So she took them out, and ran in just her shoes. But then, her knees started to hurl. So she got rid of the shoes all together. "It feels good, natural," says 17-year-old Karz. a rising senior al Park City High School. She can run about seven miles without shoes before her feet get Ux> tender, and she's working on toughening them up for even longer runs. Which makes sense. Alter all. she's part of a Park City cross country team that has won State for the past three ye;irs. Karz herself has never finished below the top-20 in the state meet, placing 14th. 8th, and 11 th in the past three years. Even though she's been training all summer for the upcoming cross country season, something else - something more immediate - has made necessary a three-sport preparation. Thatfc because Karz. who runs and swims for Park City, will compete in her first-ever triathlon today, July 30, in Idaho. A typical day starts out at S a.m., when she goes to cross country practice. Then, she heads off to bike practice from 9-12, and then, a couple of times a week, she'll swim in either the pool or the Jordanelle, where she goes to get experience in the open water. For Karz. though, experience hasn't always been necessary. She had never swum before last year - but sure enough, she excelled, making the state meet in the breast- Please see Devery, B-3 Silver Mountain Building Located at Kimball Junction, East of Kimball Plaza, Across from Holiday Inn OPENING SUMMER 2006 I 20,000 q. rt.
