Of the Record staff The Park City Kiniball Arts Festival runs August 6 and 7, but it would he a misconception to say Arts Festival weekend starts on Saturday. That would obscure some significant events happening before ihen. Really, the weekend will begin Thursday evening, when the Kimball Art Center's Gala and Art Auction kicks off the Arts Festival festivities. "If you have a home and you're looking to fill the walls, this is the event," said Dan Sorensen, public relations director at the Kimball. While the Kimball has held art auction fundraisers in previous years before the Arts Festival, this year's event will feature a live auction, which the Kimball has not done in recent years. The auction will feature 90 items, with a live auction for 24 pieces and a silent auction for the rest. The items come from both local and regional artists, and cover a whole spectrum of media. There are oil paintings, walercolors, acrylic works, bronze sculptures, photographs and original lithographs, among others. Arts Fest run up highli By MATT JAMES "It has been a great collection," said Sorensen. The auction works include an equally broad swath of times and subjects, ranging from Western art to abstract pieces, and from Jerome Smith's "Buffalo Hunt," painted in 1889 and a pair of original Chagall lithographs, to other works created in 2005. Seventy of the pieces are currently on display in the Kimball's Main Gallery. looking at the show, one can recognize a variety of pieces, both from local galleries up and down Main Street, and recent Kimball exhibitions - from a Kim Rousch piece to works by the artists participating in Arte Latino. According to Sorensen, a variety of people and businesses donated the pieces to the Kimball for the auction. "A lot of it has come from individual artists and a lot of it has come from galleries," he said. The evening's festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres from Cuisine Unlimited. The live auction will be conducted by Bruce Brock and will run from 8-9 p.m. Afterward, there will be live music and dancing, featuring the Salt Lake City band Voodoo Box. Tickets to the event are $100 per person; a portion of the proceeds will go to the artists, and the majority will benefit the Art Center. The event is the organization's primary fundraiser.. Sorensen said the auction-goers would be contributing toward the KimbalTs goals. "They're helping support our mission of making the visual arts accessible in Park City," he said. out and get a sneak peak at what's available." The Gallery Stroll will run as it normally does, with light hors d'oeuvres from area restaurants in the galleries. Sorensen said the event is designed to be an informal one, with no set route, only a list of participating galleries and the opportunity to see Park City's commercially available art. Tickets for the event are $5 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. "I think that it's very important,'' said DeVon Stanfield, owner of Stanfield Fine Art. "I think that we sell something, at least, every Gallery Stroll" Gallery Stroll offers the established event After the Gala and Art Auction, on Friday He said the event offers a chance for peoevening when the Arts Festival artists on Main ple to see the galleries in a different context Street have finished their set up. "We had an excellent evening," she said. "The gallery was backed and we made a lot of great sales... as far as impulse items go, those were just flying out of the gallery." Approximately 20 galleries up and down Main Street will be involved in the event, making the Gallery Stroll one of the biggest of the year. "The nice thing about the gallery stroll is that it gives people a chance to come in and see what Park City is all about," said Sorensen. After the Gallery Stroll comes the main event, of course.
