Show C-3 The Park Record Wed/Thurs/Fri, May 4-6, 2005 ilibrary stretches beyond just books |ESL classes, bilingual *: story times available *: through library as well *"By MATT JAMES \Ofthe Record staff Tliis past Wednesday, there were seven small children silting around a conference table in the Aspen Villa Apartments staring at a speaker with varying degrees of attention. They ranged in age from three or four years old to 12 or 13 and appeared at least slightly out-of-place in the adult-sized •chairs at the big table, but none seemed to mind. They were listening to library outreach coordinator Ester Clanton read a story from a picture book. Perhaps most notably. Clanton was reading die story in both English and Spanish. Every week Clanton, the Park City Library's Spanish outreach coordinator, leads an hour-long bilingual story time at the Aspen Villa Apartments on Kearns Blvd. Last Wednesday the story was a selection about a bat that had made friends with a group of birds. On each page, Clanton would first read the words in English and then repeat them in Spanish, guiding both the Latino and while children through the narrative. Afterwards. Clanton led the group in a project making Mothers' Day cards and coloring paper masks. "Sometimes we play learning games, sometimes they bring home- work," said Clanton. The games often focus on helping the kids learn English and practice the skills learned in school, and art projects are popular as well. Clanton, who grew up in Panama and Venezuela, effortlessly slides between Spanish and English as she talks to and teaches the children, quizzing them on their vocabulary and making sure each one is involved. She said she has five children who come every week and a number of others who attend sporadically, with the sessions' attendance usually totaling about 10 kids. Clanton, who previously worked for six years as a special-ed teacher in Minnesota, has been teaching the weekly story times for about six months. The program she runs is just one of the services the Park City Library provides Spanish-speakers. Aside from the classes, the library also offers ESL classes through Holy Cross Ministries and works with the Park City School District's monthly literacy nights. "One of our goals is to increase the percentage of Hispanic users," said Park City librarian Heather Reynolds, who is in charge of the library's Latino and Spanish-language programs. The ESL classes run twice a week and offer the chance for many Spanishspeakers to leam English, and the literacy nights help promote reading in families. "While the parents are learning about literacy, the kids do a story time," explained Reynolds. Additionally, the library provides a wide array of Spanish titles ranging from graphic novels, to traditional fiction and non-fiction works, medical reference books, recorded ESL materials and children's videos. In the past year, the library has budgeted $2,000 for Latino-related materials and the Friends of the Park City Library has kicked-in another S1,500 to supplement that number. While it is hard for the library to track its percentage of Latino patrons, the use of the institution's Spanish-language materials provides a glimpse of its readership. In the past year, checkouts in Spanish adult fiction have risen 300 percent and check-outs in Spanish adult non-fiction, juvenile fiction and juvenile non-fiction have all increased more than 100 percent. "I've bought a ton of new adult fiction novels in Spanish,11 said Reynolds, noting that the library's collection in that area has tripled in the past year, mirroring the library's growth in checkouts in that area. In the past year Reynolds has traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico, (paid for partially by a grant from the American Library Association) to participate in Spanish-language book fairs and otherwise worked to grow the library's resources for Latinos and other Spanish-speakers by garnering suggestions from groups involved with the Latino community. Reynolds noted that just as Latinos are a vital part of the Park City community, so they are a vital part of the Library's mission. "Because such a large part of the population in the city limits is Hispanic, it's important that they know this resource is here for them and it's free," said Reynolds. The biggest obstacles to increased use by Latinos, she noted, were a lack of easy transportation and a limited ability to spread the world about the library within the Latino community. Clanton said she faced similar problems with her bilingual story time. "We're still trying to get the word out," she said about the program. There were many afternoons when she spent considerable time knocking on doors and talking to families in the Aspen Villas about the program, she noted. The most difficult part of the job, she said, was often simply breaking through the cultural barriers to help most people understand that the story time program is free. Over the summer, Clanton said she hopes to hold the story times outside, twice a week with more active games in addition to the regular program. She said any help, for one week or for more, would be welcome. "The library is always looking for volunteers, just in general," she said. "I would love for someone to come and play guitar or talk about what they do." Help is never a bad thing, Clanton noted, when one has to wrangle a dozen kids. But the pay-off is worthwhile. "I just absolutely love the kids," she said. "It's very rewarding." Reynolds shared that sentiment. •'It's just very rewarding to feel like you Ye helping all parts of your community," she noted. "It's exciting to tell them about the library." W1M1WJ6OT GOT BALLS! Pool Tables, Re-Felting, Accessories & Moving Game Room Equipment 6c Furniture, Poker Tables, _, Air Hockey, Ping Pong & .
