On Friday, Park City High School hosted - and prevailed at - this year's Sterling 'Scholars event, a statewide scholarship program sponsored by the Deseret Morning News and KSL TV Outstanding students are recognized in up to 14 categories by their schools, then compete against students across the stale for scholarships and prizes. Park City had winners in three categories and four runncrs-up. Neighboring North Summit had two winners and one runner-up. South Summit had one winner. Both Summit Schools outperformed PCHS last year. Summit ('ounty schools are in the Northeast Region of the competition, which encompasses Rich, Morgan. Wasatch, Duchesne, Daggett. and Uintah counties as well. Park City High School sent its students home early Friday lo host the event, which included interviews for all finalists, dinner. and an awards ceremony in the evening. Biology teacher Mary Purzycki and chemistry teacher Maureen Amendola both coached Park City's team of scholars and managed the hundreds of students, judges, educators, and parents who converged on the home of the Miners Friday. Principal Hal Smith describes the two women as "science goddesses" for their labors. "Getting everybody where they need to go has been the biggest logistical struggle," Purzycki said, noting that newcomers can sometimes get lost in Park City High School. The interviews can be a tittle stressful, given that there's money on the line. But Amendola says the event is more a celebration of student achievements than a competition. Nominees are judged based on their achievements in scholarship, leadership. and citizenship/service. Judges come from public high schools, higher education, and the private sector. The firsl-place winner in each category receives $500 and the two runners up receive $300.
