Show Wed/Thurs/Fri, May 4-6, 2005 The Park Record B-8 Fisherman creates unique tackle box BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) When it comes to nighttime or early morning . fishing, seeing what's in the tackle « box can sometimes be a challenge. Now, thanks to Wyoming County native Penny Brooks and her partner, a top-of-thc-line lighted tackle box is available for the fishing enthusiast. In April 2004, Brooks & Baker I X C signed a worldwide licensing and manufacturing agreement with Flambeau Inc. on the Night Ranger product line of lighted boxes. It is the only company with the rights to market the lighted tackle box. The lighted tackle box is equipped with the Night Ranger waterproof lighting system and its adjustable Super Bright LED angled • beam that boasts 150,000 hours, or 10 years, oflife. The Ughi is powered by three AAA batteries, which lasl , an average of 100 to 125 hours. 15&20 yard roll-off cans for removal of debris. Commercial/Residential 435-336* JUNK (5865) Capital Improvement Plan Open House Park City Municipal Corporation will hold a public Open House on Wednesday, May 4th, 2005 from 7:00-9:00 PM at the Miner's Hospital. The Open House will provide interested citizens with information on the City's recommended five year capital improvement plan; and the City's draft strategic plan for City-owned properties with development potential. Any questions, call Kent Cashel 615-5360. The boxes are 70 percent translucent, and with the light illuminated and the box lid closed, it has been referred to as a lantern box and the walking lantern. What makes this project unique versus many others is that it was conceived from start to finish by Brooks and her partner. Todd C Baker. "This entire project was personally self-financed for the lasl eight years," Brooks said. "All the research and development, prototyping and exposure in magazines, newspapers and national televised news telecasts, not to forget the contract negotiations with Flambeau Inc., which look the space of twoand-a-half years, was solely on our shoulders." Brooks said the company remains a two-person operation. "We overcame many issues along the way." she said. "We did all of the marketing research, prototype design, contract negotiations and Web site design." Brooks said their goal was to sec the product on the shelves of retailers. The Night Ranger lighted tackle box will be in major retailers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom soon. Brooks said. Currently the tackle box is available from two online stores, Steve's Fishing Supplies and Land Big Fish. "When it comes to nighttime or early-morning fishing ... no other tackle box even comes close," Brooks said. Brooks, born in Mullens, resided in Pierpoinl for many years. "My father was a coal miner, working in the Otscgo, Maben and Slab Fork mines," she said. "When the mining industry began to wane in the late '50s, my family moved to California." Brooks graduated high school and college in California. She worked for Lockheed Martin for 21 years before being laid off. "After a few months, I met Todd Baker," she said. "He had a patented product, a lighted fishing tackle box." Brooks said they moved to North Carolina to pursue the project and formed Baker Innovations LLC in 1998. The lighted tackle box was successfully unveiled at this year's ICAST Show in Las Vegas and was also featured on NBC, ABC, Fox and UPN news channels, as well as many magazines and newspapers. Brooks said she is hoping some of her West Virginia relatives and old friends will check out the unique product. "I like to think of my story as, 'Local girl from West Virginia makes good,"1 she said. Breckenridge gets expansion approval, again BRECKENRIDGE. Colo. (AP) The Breckenridge Ski Area has won approval of new Summit Lifl on Peak 8 a second time. The Forest Service's district ranger had approved Ihe lifl in January, but officials then said it had to be approved by the forest supervisor. Snowmass is facing a similar problem. But on Friday, Maribeth Gustafson, White River National Forest Supervisor, announced that she had approved the Breckenridge lift. "I understand and personally share many of the values that the public has raised regarding the installation of the Peak 8 Summit Lift," Gustafson said. "In reaching my decision, I must consider that the overarching intent of providing a ski area on public land is to provide opportunities for the public to use and enjoy our National Forests," she added. Her decision remains subject to an appeal. Meanwhile, Roger McCarthy, Breckenridge cliief operating officer, said, "The clock is ticking." He said the resort is hopeful it can complete complete the $4 million Summit Lift this summer. The new lift would allow easier access for skiers and snowboarders to reach about 400 acres of advanced and expert terrain, including Imperial Bowl and the Lake Chutes, presently requiring about a 45minute hike. The Aspen Skiing Co. also is awaiting a decision by Gustafson. The expansion onto Burnt Mount and replacement of the Sheer Bliss chairlift also had been approved by the local forester. The ski industry has filed a complaint over the delays. The National Ski Areas Association, an industry lobbying organization, sent a letter to Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth asking that the Forest Service continue to delegate authority for decisions to district rangers rather than making everything go through the forest supervisor. "The ability of a District Ranger to sign (National Environmental Protection Act) documents allows for efficient, timely and local decision-making, and it should be encouraged, rather than discouraged, within the agency," NSAA President Michael Berry wrote to Bosworth.
