Show B-12 Wed/Thurs/Fri, May 4-6, 2005 The Park Record SUMMIT m TM 00K Three unique resorts in one exciting town* Chamber of Commerce Convention & Visitors Bureau Letter From Communications Department the President Wraps up Summer Media Tour Dear Chamber Members, April and May arc the months thai the Chamber/Bureau dedicates to preparing for our next fiscal year's (July 2005 thru June 2006) marketing and business plan. Similar to a retail business that sells next season's items months in advance, the Chamber/Bureau is currently focused on developing the plan for advertising, marketing, communications and sales activities for the 2005/2006 winter season. Believe it or not, we are even planning for summer 2006. These strategies arc developed through a process of utilizing experts in the Park City community who come together to analyze the workings of last year's plan and then evolve it into a plan for the next year At the same time, we attempt to project what revenues to expect for the next year in order to finance our marketing and sales activities. We then determine what it will take in personnel to accomplish the sales and marketing plan we come up with. A Board of Directors, elected by the Chamber/Bureau's membership, must approve the financing and tactics used to implement the plan for the next fiscal year. When looking at where the funds come from to accomplish this task, the Chamber/Bureau looks to raising dollars from our membership in ihc form of not only membership dues, but with "pay to play1' co-operative opportunities to accomplish some of our advertising objectives, In addition, we rc-invest much of the Transient Room Tax (the 3% tax on a hotel or lodging stay of 30 days or less) collected by Summit County. This lax revenue goes back into marketing for new visitors, thereby increasing sales tax collections for local government jurisdictions. The Chamber/Bureau also generates some funding thanks to strategic partnerships with companies like American Express, among others. We receive further assistance through grants from government jurisdictions such as Park City Municipal Corporation, which helps to cover operating Visitor Information Centers and other community functions. This week the Chamber/Bureau's communications team, Mark Bennett and Hilary Reiter, concludes a whirlwind, tour U> key markets in an effort to pilch Park City summer story ideas to travel editors and reporters. We identified some of Park City's top summer markets, including areas where residents would be looking for "beat the hcat"-type getaways. Based on these criteria, we visited Chicago/Detroit, New Orleans/Atlanta. Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and several Florida cities. Not only was this successful inreachingout to new publications and re-connecting with ones we have met before, but it was a great means lo educate the media about Park City's dynamic activities, nch cultural events, and affordable luxury lodging and fine dining. During these visits, we had meetings with journalists from publications including Via, Oakland Tribune. Orlando Sentinel, Miami We are pleased at the fast result! that ore beginning to come in. I Magazine, a new glossy, women's publication in Las Vegas, plans to include Park City in one of their summer getaway issues. The managing editor of What's On, a \fegas-bosed lifestyle magazine, hns confirmed her participation in the summer'sfirstpress trip. Arizona Morning News ran a segment on the abundant snowfall Park City experienced this winter. It aired in conjunction with the resorts' closing weekend. There also has been considerable interest from other journalists we met regarding visiting Park City as port of our scheduled press trips this summer. Ski Utah Shows Appreciation to Local Media Ski Utah held its annual Local Media Day on April 2. This has become an annual tradition ul the end of the ski season. The slate's ski industry public relations representatives enjoy a social outing on the slopes of one of the resorts with reporters, photographers, editors and freelancers from Utah's local radio, television and newspaper stations. This year's event was hosted at Snowbasin, which followed last year's gathering at Deer Valley Resort. The annual Ski Utah Excellence in Journalism Award was given out during the press conference component of the afternoon to FOX 13. Ski Utah President Kip Pitou gave a speech thanking the local medin for their support of Utah's ski industry and predicted once the skier days have been totaled from all the resorts that the 2004/2005 will once again be a record-breaking ski season for Utah. The day's activities included a slalom course competition with teams of media competing against each other. Once again, Park City Chamber members were generous in their contributions to the prize arsenal. We'd like to extend our gratitude to Rat Rabbet Gallery & Framing, OK3 Air, Stein Eriksen Lodge and Washington School Inn for their fabulous donations. These long stays provide some lodging entities with a consistent cash flow to balance their visitor portfolio, and the Chamber/Bureau stays involved with this market by providing many services to the senior guestIn January of each year, we begin distribution of a lodging directory to seniors who contact the Chamber/Bureau The directory includes Chamber/Bureau member lodging entities who are interested in providing discounts to the long-term renter. Secondly, the Chamber/Bureau encourages members to offer special discounts and coupon deals for the seniors. These discount coupons and other offers are distributed in packets to over 800 seniors upon check-in at participating lodging properties. Because many seniors are repeal guests year after year, the Chamber/Bureau assembles and distributes senior phone directories. The program culminates in a senior barbequc each July at a local park. Generally, about 150 seniors attend this event that includes lunch, entertainment and a drawing for free gifts! To participate-in the 2005 Silver Card Program (or if you have questions about the program), please contact Deborah Lewis. program manager, at (435) 658-9621 or dcb@parkcitymfo.com by May 6. Denver Media Conference Creates Prime Networking Opportunities The Chamber/Bureau's communications manager. Mark Bennett, attended a media conference in Denver from April 17-20. This is the third event of its kind, where the Public Relations Society of America teams up with the Society of American Travel Writers. There were over 100 journalists from across the country in attendance, from daily papers as large as the Wall Street Journal and USA Today, to key magazines such as National Geographic Traveler and Travel + Leisure. Bennetl reports that there were numerous opportunities lo meet oneon-one with these writers, lo pilch the Park City story and develop or renew relationships with them. On the professional development side, there were plenty of relevant media panels useful to the attending PR representatives. These ranged from discussions about utilizing new technology to working with airlines, to developing strategics working with specific media types, such as niche publications, television and media syndicates. When asked what were among his most noteworthy thoughts about the event. Bennett responded, "It was the familiar faces among the journalists serving on the media panels. Two things arc significant here, one being that attending this event is a very cost-effective way to stay in touch with these folks. Better yd, this iclls me that we have done a pretty good job of getting around the country to meet with so many of these journalists in recent years." |
