While Mangelsen's images don't have a specific visual signature, as a photographer, he has a very specific professional one. He never photographs animals on game farms or in non-natural habitats, and he never retouches or digitally enhances his images. "It's all done in color, and it's all natural. None of it is done in game farms," said Laura Alleman, the manager of Images of Nature's Park City location. "He's kind of known as a purist in wildlife photography." "There's a number of photographers that use game farms," said Mangelsen. "Its one of the things I'm trying to fight against." Instead, said Mangelsen, he photographs the animals in the habitats where they live without selecting any pre-arranged spot or time. It means more time spent waiting to capture the right image and the right light, but it means that not only are the images of nature, but they are natural as well. The colors a viewer sees on a print were the colors Mangelsen himself saw when he took a picture. Part of this philosophy stems from his experiences as a boy, out hunting, sitting quietly in a duck blind with his father along the North Platte River. Another part comes from his formal education. "One of the interesting things about Tom is that he's not formally trained in photography," said Alleman. "In college he studied wildlife biology." And that education - in the sciences - has informed his artwork as much as anything. "It helps me," said Mangelsen. "I know enough about animals and seasons and behaviors that I know where they're going to be, what they might do... So many things are repeatable in nature." In many cases, he said, a huge part of capturing the right photo is being in the right place and waiting for something to happen. Mangelsen has done a bit of that r th wee ARIES (March 20 - April 19) Consider hibernation this weekend, and make sure you get lots of sleep. The picture shows king penguins on the beach in Gold Harbor on South Georgia Island in the far south Atlantic between Tierra Del Fuego and the Antarctic coast. over the past year. In that time, his travels have taken him to Antarctica, South Georgia Island, Alaska, Japan, Seychelles, Rwanda, Madagascar, Tanzania, Yellowstone, the Tetons at the Platte River. In particular, he talked about the trips to Antarctica and Japan, where he spent his time photographing penguins (and other marine life), and snow monkeys, respectively. "They're new places, new landscapes and new species for me," he said. "I've never been to Anlarctica and seen the penguins." And the snow monkeys, he said, were one of the great wildlife scenes he's ever photographed. He also mentioned his time in Africa as a highlight, Standing in Antarctica one month and in the Serengeti another had a profound effect in and of itself, he noted. "It makes you realized how huge the earth is, and at the same time, how small it is, that I can be at both of these places inside a few months." The next stop in Mangelsen's journey will take him to Park City over the weekend. He will be in town for an artist reception, this tc o f re b r u a ing company with Eccentric Uranus.
