Show The Park Record B- Dog power: sleds skim across snow WENTWORTH AT S U M M I T Wed/Thurs/Fri, February 2-4, 2005 (AP) The lol at Hardware Ranch was in a frenzy. Bui il wasn't snowmobiles - several trailers sal empty, but not a distant engine whine remained - or kids leaping about, looking at hundreds of elk, begging for a sleigh ride. Instead, it was sled dogs, a bakers dozen, lunging toward the harness, staring excitedly al the sled and 60 miles of pulling ahead of them. 'Hie biting air was pricked with their yelps, half-howls and muled barks as Mike Carmichael, a musher from Avon, readied the sled, straightened the ropes and made last-minute corrections, including swapping his large, nearly identical inukluks, which had somehow ended up on the wrong feel. "They need markers on these things." he muttered. 'Hie slots in front of the sled, anchored to Carmichael's truck, were eventually filled with lunging, pulling dogs. And the yelps grew more insistent. Until; *'C"mon, let s go." Silence. A soft clank as the anchor dropped. A flurry of 52 silent feel, pin drops on the soft, groomed snow. And 10 yards later, enough speed to jolt Carmichael ever so slightly off the sled on a trail-beginning speed bump. Almost immediately, the team is up to speed. Over the 60 miles, the dogs will average between 8 and 12 mph. And these are the slower dogs. The mellow breed. Purebred Siberian huskies, the -traditional "commuter car" of Alaskan natives, Carmichael said, bred to get the people to hunting and fishing sites, sometimes many miles from home. Compare them with Kale Si. Onge's bunch: "My dogs arc really wired," said the Millville musher. "They are crazy. 'Iliey have to be moving constantly" Si. Onge runs Alaskan huskies, a caffeinated mix of husky and German shorlhair, greyhound or COUNTY / We axe pleased to announce the opening of The Stratford .•.special care unit •.. which strives to bring the challenges associated with memory disorders such as Alzheimer's into a more manageable perspective. Carmichael, a musher for 13 years, and St. Onge, a recreational musher since 1983 and competitive since 2000, are two of a handful of mushcrs in Cache County. It's a small bin varied group. Carmichael, along with Sue Morgan of Richmond, specializes in distance races - he will qualify for Iditarod this year, and his eventual goal is the even tougher Yukon Quest. St. Onge and her husband. Rick, run mid-distance sprints _ Kate St. Onge placed second in two of the most competitive such races this year. Amy Eskelsen, Sinithficld. has a team made up entirely of adopted dogs. And the future is Kylie Price, a 15-year-old musher from Millville. who already has her own team. She rail a four-dog team in the first Cache Valley K9 Mushing Challenge on Jan. 8. Its a sport of passion that requires a love for the dogs and the outdoors. "They're bred to do il, its what they (the dogs) want to do." St. Onge said. "It's when they don't get to run and pull the sled and be on the team is when they get depressed." Change a couple of words - "run" and "pull" to "ride" - and St. Onge could be talking about the musher, nol the mushec. Mushcrs generally spend three or four days a week on the trail. Its the effort of a full-lime job with the pay of a heroin addiction. "You don't become a musher lo gel rich." Kate St. Onge said. "You gel poor." Carmichael noted that his four sponsors, including his own company. Carmichael Financial Advisors, pay for a seasons worth of food for about five of his 16 actively training dogs. He devotes about 30 hours a week to the sport for six months of every year. St. Onge gave up a career as a registered nurse lo train dogs in the winter and horses all summer. Much of the training is just to get them into shape. The dogs run 30 to 60 miles Ihrce or four times a week. Carmichaclsdogs arc about to run in the Race lo the Sky, a Montana endurance test of 250 miles. His task is to get them ready for prolonged running in any conditions. Kale St. Onge aims to get her dogs going as fast as they possibly can and keep them at that speed for 30 miles. In the World Sled Dog Championships of the International Federation of Sleddog Sports at Bend, Ore., St. Onges dogs averaged just less than 15 mph over the 30mile course, a course St. Onge called "grueling." On level terrain, the dogs can average IS miles an hour. Siberians "save a little energy for the way home." Carmichael said. "They go about 80 percent; Alaskans are always going 110 percent, lliey donl save anything." Both dogs have their trade-offs. Carmichael knows he's nol going to win any big races - he aims to be "the fastest purebred team, which visually puts me in the middle of the pack" - but he also knows that he won't have to baby-sit his dogs. "There are two things that if you don'l have, your car is dead in the middle of nowhere," Carmichael said. First, the feel. And this is where Carmichaels slower dogs have the advantage. It is rare that their wide, tough feel need any extra protection. Although Alaskan huskies often need booties to protect their feet, or jackets to keep them warm. Ciirmichaels Siberians trek through hundreds of miles of Montana wilderness, often with almost no visible sign of wear. "I've never seen Mike booty his dogs." St. Onge said, a bit wistful. What he mostly has to worry about is keeping his dogs fed and hydrated. The dogs eat lots of meat and high-prote'm dog food "If I cant get them to drink. I'm dead in the water," Carmichael said. The nexl trick is to get all of the dogs to run where the musher wants them lo run.-. Neither learn - St. Onges six Alaskans or Carmichaels 12 to 16 Siberians - has a great advantage here. Carmichael said the commands for right and left do work. "Well, most all the time." he said. "Of course, you're dealing with 16 little minds, and they all have their own ideas." 'Jlie sheer numbers make il difficult for Carmichael. 'flic "crazy energy" is Si. Onges biggest nemesis. Lasl Wednesday, at Hardware Ranch, "I wanted them logo left and they did not want to ..." She was shouting '"Ha! Ha!" - the command for left - but Ihey lunged right in unison. She thought about dropping the snow hooks - the metal claws that act as brakes or anchors - but then thought "they could just keep lunging at the harness and go right off the hooks." "They got their way," she admitted. "All right, lets take this trail. Let's go exploring." It can be difficult coming up with unique, meaningful names for two dozen dogs. There are a ample of strategies: Mike Carmichael s is to lei someone else do it. In his case, it's his wife. OK. But Kathy Carmichael and Kate St. Onge both have the samestrategy: themes. Bleu and Cheddar. Fancy and Porsche; Guinness. Ebony. Domino: Dancer. Pranccr. Comet. Cupid. But next time the St. Onges have the task. Kale said she'll take the lead froTn the breeder that named their most recent dog. Jerry. "Dogs deserve people names. They are more worthy of people names than some people are," she said.
