The Sundance participants filled the venues theater to hear the results of the Film Festival competitions, but instead of the black-lie formality of the Academy Awards, the predominant style was jeans, t-shirts and sweaters. There was a full house at the venue to see Ira Sachs' "Forty Shades of Blue" win the Grand Jury Prize in the American Dramatic Competition and "Why We Fight," score the Grand Jury Prize for an American Documentary. "Why We Fight,11 asks crucial questions about the time we are living in, noted American Documentary jury member Jehane Noujaim as she presented the award to director Eugene Jarccki. And Jarecki seemed to pick up on Noujaim's theme in his acceptance speech. "The world is looking to American as a beacon," he said, "and the world sees America as a very saddening beacon. And as I look across the room, there is a family here of people," he said. It's terribly crucial fro the rest of the world to see." "Why We Fight,'1 said Jarecki, is one of his efforts to try and make sense of the world. Sachs accepted the award for "Forty Shades of Blue" noting his indebtedness to the three actors at the film's heart, Dina Korzun, Rip Torn and Darren Burrows. Afterwards, Sachs noted that the Sundance award was particularly sweet, considering his nearly life-long ties to Park City through his father, who calls the area home. The 2005 Utah Arts Festival will start on Thursday, June 23 and run through Sunday, June 27. "1 feel a really warm place in my heart for Sundance, and it's for a lot of different reasons," said Sachs. Sachs, who has attended the festival for 19 years, at various intervals, said that when he was younger, he never even pictured winning an award there. "When I started going to the film festival,1' he said. "It was just a place for me to go and see a bunch of great films." He noted that instead of defining the film festival for him, the Grand Jury Prize will just be another chapter of his memories there. "Its not just a fundraiser," said Cathy King, who helped organize the event. "We also want everyone to enjoy an outdoor activity." With that in mind, the non-profit came up with "Snow Cats and Chili Dogs," a day-long event featuring snowmobiling, snowshoeing and a chili-tasting, among other events. And the most distinctive feature about it? According to King, that would be its inclusiveness. "We really like to create events that involve our dogs and our animals," said King. "Snow Cats and Chili Dogs " she noted is an event that will be fun for kids, dogs, families, and anyone else who enjoyed snow and the outdoors. The event will take place in the private backcountry area of Stagecoach Estates, located near Glenwild just north of Kimball Junction, this Saturday, Feb. 5. It will start with registration at 9 a.m. in the Stagecoach Estates parking area, and continue with snowmobile trips from the parking area up to the base cabin at 10. After a morning of snowmobiling, snowshoeing and skiing, there will be the chili-tasting at noon along with hot drinks and yellow snow-cones for dessert. The outdoor activities will continue in the afternoon. For kids there will also be a snowman building contest and tubing throughout the day. "Anyone who will enjoy getting out. you should bring your snowshoes, backcountry skis, your snowmobile and you should come out," said King. In addition to personal methods of transportation, there will be some snowshoes and snowmobiles available to rent, but the numbers of those will be limited. The event will run until dusk. The suggested donation is S25 per-person with kids and dogs free, although King said people should feel free to give with whatever amount they feel comfortable. She said the idea for the event evolved gradual ly as she and her friends discussed a fundraising idea. "Vicki who lives up in the Stagecoach Estates has been a volunteer for many years, and we're big on house parties." explained King. Vicki, she said, came up with the idea of having the idea at her place in the Stagecoach Estates. Since one needs to take a snowmobile, snowshoeorski to the area, Vicki. King and the other organizers decided to incorporate those activities into the event.
