Show Lending a Hand is Easy and welcome I ByLynnCier Do you want to know just exactly what's going on in your child's day-today world at school? A subtle way to observe your child, their peers, and their teacher is to spend a little time in the classroom under the guise of a volunteer. That's just one motivation for parents to get a little more involved in their child's education. For others, volunteering is a chance to enhance the already stellar education their child is receiving, and still for others it's an opportunity to introduce a new idea or program into their children's learning environment. Whether it's a private or public school, in this era of education funding cutbacks and program eliminations, volunteers and the work they do are an absolute necessity in Park City. "Our district is so fortunate to have such a large, dedicated group of volunteers, " said School Board member Kim PHOTO COURTESY OI: UNDA JAGER Carson. "Particularly since Utah has the lowest per pupil funding in the nation, our schools rely on our volunteers to help provide programs that might not exist otherwise, such as Masterpieces in Art and elementary foreign language. They (our volun- Jave I he (fate! teers) are just incredible, ready when needed and full of greaj ideas." Volunteers can do everything from helping kids in and out of their cars safely, to organizing carnivals, book fairs and teacher appreciation weeks. They are the link that every school needs to make it successful. There is a general consensus among educators that the schools could not and would not function at their high level of competence without the ever-present volunteer. So says Parley's Park fifth-grade teacher Debra DeKoff, "Volunteers are a necessary component to meeting the needs of the children in my classroom. They serve many purposes - several without even realizing it. Volunteers assist with academic activities, sorting and organizing graded papers, onc-ononc small group tutoring, field day, field trips, and as role models. As a special guest, a parent can share their expertise or experiences - making a subject come alive. They run Math Olympiads, Masterpieces in Art, After School Enrichment, and the list goes on. As a teacher I feel fortunate to be in a school that welcomes volunteers with open arms, and to have so many parents ready, willing, and able to donate their time in my classroom.
