Show Reading skills need practice evening and a PTA reading activity in the spring. Also to enhance the school's reading program, an expansion of the WICAT computer lab will make it possible for students to spend time each week improving their computer skills. The library will also be using volunteers and expanding the number of books available to the students. An important ingredient for success is a reading program that both teaches students how to read and also excites them about reading. Research indicates that children often become better readers simply by reading more. Reading, like any other skill, improves im-proves with practice. Woods Cross Elementary is improving im-proving its reading program during the 1990-91 school year. One of the school's major goals is to improve reading scores and motivate students to read for pleasure. The first reading activity, called "Jazz Up Your Reading,' challenged all students to read 4,500 hours at home in seven weeks. Students met and exceeded the challenge. Thanks to parents and ' students, Woods Cross Wolverines read or were read 5,500 hours between be-tween Sept 10 and Oct. 26. i Mrs. Becky Parkin's class read ; 873 hours in 4 weeks and the school had hundreds of motivated and ex-; ex-; cited readers on all grade levels. The school has planned addi-r addi-r tional reading activities planned for the year which include having every : class read silently for 10 minutes j daily, 4 'Be Excited About I Reading" (BEAR) program, "Don't Be a Couch Potato (no television) tele-vision) Week, a parent workshop |
