Oilmen drill sideways in Moob MOAB A Texas-based company will make the first attempt at horizontal drilling for gas and oil in Utah. Columbia Gas Development Corp. of Houston was to begin drilling drill-ing this month near Utah Highway 313 a horizontal oil and gas test in the Cane Creek Marker. Total measured depth of the well, located west of Moab in the Big Flat vicinity, is expected to be 9,700 feet, with a true vertical depth of approximately 7,200 feet. A company spokesman said horizontal drilling has proved to be effective in other oil fields around the world. This was the first such attempt in Utah, he said.
