Show r Vikes beat Bengals at home I I V L ' H By G.BRETT HART There's one word that describes the Viewmont Vikings 17-12 victory vic-tory over the Brighton Bengals last night besides exciting, balance. As the last three seconds ticked off the clock, pandemonium broke loose as elated Viking fans poured onto the field to celebrate with their team. It had done the impossible, beat Brighton. Viewmont's characteristically tough defense was coupled this week with a strong, balanced offensive attack. Viewmont's offensive attack, led as usual by senior Jason Hynek at quarterback, featured a one-two ground attack led by Kirk Wersland and Kevin Campbell. The two combined for well over 100 yards on the ground. Viewmont scored first behind a 35-yard Campbell field goal which capped a 71 -yard, nine-minute drive. Late in the second quarter, Viewmont's Scott Lalli picked off a Brighton pass and returned it to the Bengal's 46-yard line. Two plays, 46 yards and 18 seconds later, Hynek kept the ball and plunged into the end zone scoring scor-ing the first touchdown of the game. The two-play drive was highlighted by a 40-yard Hynek pass to Brian Coombs. Campbell's point after was good, and the Vikings went into the locker room with a 10-0 halftime lead. FROM B-l Vicwmont scored the only third period points with almost three minutes left in the quarter. Wersland scored on a dive play from four yards out. The Viking drive took just over six minutes and covered 71 yards. Campbell nailed the point after, and Viewmont took an uneasy 17-0 lead. Uneasy because the Vikings had awakened a sleeping Bengal. Brighton scored 12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and threatened to get the ball back again. After the Bengals first score, which came on a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Pierce to Todd Sofonia, Brighton went for an unsuccessful two-point conversion. The Bengals wasted no time in scoring again driving 74 yards. Now the pressure was on the Bengals to choose between an easy point-after kick or a two-point conversion. con-version. Brighton went for the two-points but Pierce's pass to Sofonia was incomplete, in-complete, leaving the Bengals short by five points. On the ensuing kickoff, Brighton attempted an on-sides kick and successfully suc-cessfully recovered the ball. Fortunately for the Vikes, the play was called back on an offsides penalty. The Vikings now had to hold on for two minutes, and the game would be theirs. Again the Viewmont offense came through driving from the Viking Vik-ing 30 to the Bengal 30-yard line, eating up over a minute and a half. On fourth and eight, Viewmont attempted a 50-yard field goaL Campbell's kick fell just inches short, but the Viewmont effort would be enough to guarantee a Viking victory. |
