Show Fire sweeps through Woods Cross car lot r By SCOTT SUMMERILL WOODS CROSS-Fire totally engulfed four vehicles and damaged 1 1 others at the Auto Auction at 500 South 1700 West in Woods Cross last Thursday when an overfilled gas tank of a portable water heating unit being used to heat water to clean the vehicles ignited. Two engines and a hazmat (hazardous materials) team from the South Davis Fire District (SDFD) responded to the call and had the blaze out in a matter of minutes. SDFD officials said the fire started with a portable water heater in the back of a Golden Glow detailing detail-ing van. The gas tank on the heater had apparently been overfilled, and the heat from the unit, coupled with the hot temperatures of the day, ig nited the fuel. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the detailer's van, which was also carrying gasoline gaso-line and cleaning solvents, and three of the Auto Auction's vehicles were fully involved. "There was no explosion' said SDFD Chief Brent Argyle, "but there was enough fuel to spread the fire. The extinguishers they had on hand just weren't enough to put it out" There were no injuries reported, but SDFD officials estimate the damage in excess of $50,000. No citations have been issued in connection con-nection with the incident. Auto Auction officials refused to comment on the incident or allow any photographs of the damage claiming such action is against policies of the parent company, General Motors. |
