Show Fires minimal over 4th of July holiday By SCOTT SUMMER1LL BOUNnFUL-Despite dry conditions con-ditions and sweltering summer heat, the 4th of July turned out to be an extremely light work day for firefighters with only six small grass fires in the areas covered by the South Davis Fire District (SDFD) and the Bountiful Fire Department (BFD). BFD Chief Jerry Lemon said his department responded to four grass fires that were all quickly contained and extinguished. All were the result of fireworks, but there were no injuries or damage to structures. 'We're lower than normal right now (with the number of fires responded to). But, we'll have to follow it through the month," he said. j Lemon said the reason there were so few fires on the 4th was because most people go out of town to watch wat-ch firework displays in other cities. However, the upcoming Pioneer Days holiday could prove to be the opposite. 'The 24th is our heaviest time," Lemon said. "People stay home and set off their fireworks more on the 24th than on the 4th. ' ' The SDFD reported two small grass fires over the 4th of July. Both were quickly extinguished with no property damage or injuries. ' |
