BOUNTIFUL Driving southbound on Interstate 15 near 1000 North a motorist can either remain on the freeway or exit left onto 500 West into Bountiful. An elderly Idaho couple did neither Saturday afternoon and it cost them. Utah Highway Patrol officers are not sure why, but William Ridell, 74, Hagerman, Idaho, drove his 1991 Cadillac DeVille straight ahead and went off the east side of the interstate and into a cement embankment shortly after 1 p.m. The momentum carried the car to the top of the embankment where it rolled off the east end and did several revolutions before coming to a halt. Mr. Ridell, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and became pinned under the right rear tire. His 67-year-old wife, Martha, was wearing wear-ing her seatbelt and was pinned inside the car. She was extracted from the vehicle by emergency services personnel per-sonnel using the ' jaws of life. ' ' Capt. Paul Richards, a public information officer with the South Davis Fire District, said Mr. Ridell suffered suf-fered severe injuries and was rushed by helicopter to the University of Utah Medical Center. Mrs. Ridell suffered severe head and shoulder injuries in-juries and was taken by ambulance to the same location. loca-tion.
