Show Elderly man killed while attempting to prime carburetor By MARK EDDINGTON Staff Writer BOUNTIFUL A 70-y ear-old Bountiful man was killed in a freak accident Sunday morning when the car he was attempting to jump si art backfired while he was under the hood and caught fire. Charles Bingham was attempting to prime the carburetor on a Ford Escort with gasoline while getting a jumpstart from a 1986 Volkswagen shortly before noon. Bountiful Deputy Fire Chief Ron Hatch said the car backfired, covering the victim vic-tim with gasoline and fumes and catching both vehicles on fire. "The car backfired and the gas and fumes came back on him," Hatch explained. Bingham was rushed to Lakeview Hospital with third degree inhalation bums from the chest area on up. He was pronounced pronounc-ed dead Sunday about 3 p.m., according ac-cording to Lakeview spokesperson Susan Muldoon. The person helping Bingham at the time of the accident escaped injury. |
