Show Utah Figure Skating Club busy preparing for Nationals Figure skaters return with titles i : 11 '.iiVsii : kHa X w jp I i I ' s $ I i ' ' ByTOMHARALDSEN Sports Editor BOUNTTFUL-"If you were to drop by the Bountiful Recreation Center Ice Arena some afternoon to relax and watch some of the arena's best figure skaters work out, you might not realize what an important year this is for the Utah Figure Skating Club." So stated Dorothy Bowers, spokesman for the UFSC, who, along with those skaters and coaches, is putting forth a tremendous tremen-dous effort as the skating season heads for a February culmination. And this year, that culmination takes on special meaning as the UFSC and the Junior League of Salt Lake City, combine to host the United States Figure Skating Championships both at the Bountiful Boun-tiful Arena and in the Salt Palace. Those events will take place next February. Although the bulk of publicity, the banners, the billboards and the newspaper articles and TV spots won't begin appearing until after the first of the year, Bowers pointed ' out that "there is a flurry of planning plann-ing and preparation by many committees com-mittees going on behind the scenes--soliciting donations and program ads, arranging for the hundreds of meals that will be served during Nationals to , skaters, officials, the press, and designing and obtaining he souvenirs that will be sold during dur-ing the competition." She said the skaters themselves have been training intensively with one goal in mind: to qualify for the. Nationals. Many have participated in competitions which do not qualify qual-ify them directly for Nationals but which help them polish their skills and build their confidence. This year, the UFSC had many out-of-state entries at its annual Copper Cup competition due, in part, to the coming of Nationals to Utah. Skaters and coaches like to , test the ice and scout out the location loca-tion well before the Nationals, Bowers said.
