Show A tribute to the fans for all their support Foul Lines By TOM HARALDSEN Clipper Sports Editor to beat Woods Cross. The Wildcats proved a lot with that win. There are several key games this week. Here are my picks: WOODS CROSS 28 EMERY 20Now that Wildcat quarterback Tye Rogers is looking like Ty Detmer, and the offense has another dimension, I think Woods Cross just might go all the way. The Spartans Spar-tans have never played at Rice Stadium before. Woods Cross got to the turf last year. This year, they'll reach the finals. DAVIS 31 BRIGHTON 20-Though both teams shutout opponents last week, Davis had the stronger offense. If Davis doesn't turn the ball over, and plays the way it did against Cyprus, the Darts will reach next Friday's final, probably against Bonneville. BYU-38 AIR FORCE 31--A barnburner again in Provo, and this score may be conservative. The Cougars have everything to gain in beating the Falcons, who are already assured a bowl berth by winning winn-ing the Commander-in-Chief trophy (they'll go to the Liberty Bowl if they don't win the WAC). Brent Musburger and Kenny Stabler will be there doing the game for CBS, so please, Cougars, don't mess1 up. UTAH 37 NEW MEXICO 24--A week off will help the Utes prepare for a big finish. Utah's best chance for another win this year comes at home with the Lobos. SAN JOSE STATE 37 UTAH STATE 24--Reality returns to Cache Valley, WEBER 34 SOUTHWEST STATE 28-The Wildcats have to win again eventually, don't they? By the way, where is Southwest State? NOTRE DAME 49 SMU 7Can 'you believe someone scheduled this one this year? UPSET OF THE WEEK: OKLAHOMA STATE 27 COLORADO 24Don't ask me why, but I have this funny feeling that the Buffs are coming down too fast from the win over Nebraska. I'd love to see , Colorado win, but if it doesn't, remember where you read it first i""'" i " ii.' i . ' i It goes without saying that our county was well represented in the 3-A and 4-A state football playoffs this year. All four local schools earned berths in the inter-region games, and two teams, Davis and Woods Cross, have legitimate shots at a state title. What may not be as well documented is the fine support each school got this year from its studentbodies and fans. And no where was that more apparent than in three ' 'road' ' games last Friday. In Sl George, Dixie College officials stated nearly 2000 supporters sup-porters showed up for the. Woods Cross Wildcats in their triple-overtime triple-overtime win over Dixie. That figure may be a bit high, but the point is that plenty of Wildcat faithful made the trek to St. Georger many starting at 6 a.m. Friday and not returning until late Friday night Their efforts were certainly rewarded with a thrilling victory. At Jordan High, Bountiful's side of the field was nearly filled to capacity with Braves' supporters. And none left midway through the final period when Jordan took a seemingly unreachable 21-0 lead. They were loud and Supportive the whole way, through a great Bountiful Boun-tiful comeback that tied the score in the final minutes. In fact, Bountiful's Boun-tiful's grandstand looked at least as full as Jordan's. And at Rice Stadium Friday night, in freezing conditions, the Davis High faithful were out in force. The game was a stinker from the beginning, a real rout, but that didn't damper the Davis spirit. It's well documented that Davis fans support their teams at slate tournaments tour-naments as well as any school around. So hats off to all you who stand by your young men and women. I hope I'll see that sort of support at this week's 3-A state volleyball tournament at West High for Bountiful and Woods Cross, not to mention the football semifinals this weekend. Keep up the good work. PREDICTIONS: Nd one was happier than me about being wrong and picking Dixie |
