Hopp, Commander of the Ogden Air Logistics Center, HAFB, was the, guest speaker at the first meeting of the Layton Chamber of Commerce for 1989. The commander comman-der assumed his present position in November, 1988. Major General Hopp told Cham-. Cham-. ber members he was excited to be at Hill because this base "represents the best base in our System.' ' s He then predicted that the 1990-91 time period would be one of stability or level growth at Hill. "Last year we had cut backs in defense de-fense spending and in the F-4s but with the introduction of the C-130s at Hill this has stabilized," the commander reasoned. He also explained ex-plained that Hill, workers would be tearing down and refurbishing OV-lOs. "We can't just stay there," the commander stated. "The Air Force is moving from the older sheet metal work to, composites that fly by wire, highly, technical systems that require constant training." - During the' last hiring period, 2500 job applications were received for the 400 available positions. The commander predicted there would not be another major hiring for ' some time although about 30 to 50 jobs become available each month through attrition. "The quality of the work force is superior," the commander claimed. . He said quality will become the" major push at Hill. The base is divided di-vided into many "process action teams" that work to solve a problem prob-lem or get the job done more efficiently. effi-ciently. Major General Hopp said Hill is experiencing some major growth in the area of new construction, A $27 million facility is now being built that will consolidate many of the smaller shops on the base. The President's latest budget included about $12 million for new construction construc-tion at Hill. '" ' . |
