More older Americans live alone in their own homes. They like the independence and familiar surroundings. sur-roundings. But growing older I means sometimes you need help. When this happens, Lutheran social so-cial service agencies provide home health care, housecleaning, transportation trans-portation and meals. Each year, the Lutheran agencies agen-cies spend close to $1.5 billion on the services they provide, making them one of the nation's largest suppliers of care for people in need. More than 275 of these agencies are affiliated with the new Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. For older adults who are unable to live completely on their own, Lutheran agencies create innovative innova-tive continuous care communities. In these communities men. and women can be independent but still have access to the care they require. Hundreds of thousands of Americans Amer-icans seek help from Lutheran programs such as family counseling, counsel-ing, drug and alcohol abuse programs, pro-grams, and aid for the mentally ill.
