Show WX moves to 6-1 with win By GARY R. BLODGETT WOODS CROSS Those Woods Cross High School Wildcats Wild-cats just keep rolling along. Last Friday's win was at the expense ex-pense of the Bountiful High School Braves, a hard-fought 10-3 victory of a game which could have been won by either team. It was the sixth victory against one loss for the high-riding Wildcats who will play the remainder of their games on the road. And since it was the last home game, seniors on the team were introduced in-troduced with their parents at a special ceremony just before the opening kickoff. The teams left the field at half-time half-time with the score knotted at 3-all. Bountiful was the first to score with 1 1:30 left in the second period when Bob Erickson booted a 29-yard 29-yard field goal. Dave Simons split the uprights with a beautiful field goal of 42 yards with 4:22 remaining in the first half to give the Wildcats the 3-3 tie. Until then, both teams had scoring scor-ing opportunities but could not capitalize. Both defenses were outstanding out-standing and Bountiful was especially espe-cially awesome in the first half with an all-out rush that dumped Wildcat Wild-cat quarterback Chad Rawlings for several sacks. But the Wildcat offense adjusted in the second half and was more successful in keeping keep-ing the Brave intruders out of the backfield. Bountiful had some weird things happen during a late-game offensive offen-sive drive down field from its own 27 yard line. It started with a halfback pass that fell incomplete in the end zone, just inches from the intended receiver. Quarterback Burke Smith then tossed a third-down pass to Dave Barnes that ended up one foot shy of a first down on the Wildcat 18. Fullback Mike Bearnson cashed in on the first-down with a two-yard two-yard plunge to the 16. Mark Weston Wes-ton and Bearnson combined to carry car-ry the oval for another first down this time with only inches to spare and the Wildcats did not ask for a measurement. Woods Cross' Todd Fuller then stepped in front of a Smith pass and intercepted the oval at the goal line or so it appeared. But the sideline side-line official said, "no," and the Braves had still another chance to tie the score. Two plays later, Weston sprinted around the right side and what appeared to be a touchdown was nullified because of a clipping penalty in the backfield. That was all of the chances the Braves were going to get, at least on this series of plays. But a few minutes later the Braves again reached deep into Woods Cross territory on a Smith ' to Robby Bahr pass which was nullified nul-lified because the Braves had five men in the backfield. The next pass was intercepted by Woods Cross' Mike Hawley at midfield and the Wildcats were able to run the time off the clock. Woods Cross scored its lone touchdown with 2:52 left in the third period on a beautiful 30-yard pass from Rawlings to lanky Bran-den Bran-den Crossley who gathered in the pigskin on the 15 and raced into the end zone. The TD play was set up by a nifty pass to running back Chadd Watson and the extra point was kicked by Dave Simon. |
