Show Business as usual In February Norm Albiston, then running for ASUU vice president, attacked the Thompson administration because "the members of the assembly don't take themselves seriously enough." Apparently even the election of a solidly conservative, businesslike student government govern-ment isn't enough to inject seriousness into the proceedings of the ASUU Assembly. The attendance record of members this summer has been, if possible, even worse than last summer, when ASUU spent the summer trying to collect a quorum to pass the budget. Although the assembly meets only once a month, the June meeting could not attract even 33 of the 64 members and last Thursday's meeting lost its quorum when a semi-controversial semi-controversial issue came up. Older and wiser, assembly chairman Albiston has now formed a task force to study the entire question of summer sessions, attendance, and alternates. Meanwhile, summer assembly alternate Bob Curtis is challenging the attendance records of 17 members and threatening impeachment if they don't start showing up. Maybe the assembly as a practical matter can't function during summer quarter. Maybe they should just turn ASUU over to the President and Executive Cabinet from May to September. Such a move might more honestly reflect political realities the assembly refuses to do much anyway but removing even a potential alternate voice to presidential dominance can only be harmful. And, as usual, the average, semi-apathetic, student will be pushed out of his government a little farther. |
