Show Emery's made good regardless of title 'resident Alfred C. Emery's departure a year from now means that the University community must begin thinking about what kind of person should replace him. Emery provided a welcome change from the science-and-technology-oriented administration ad-ministration of Dr. James C. Fletcher. Dr. Emery recognized the importance of the humanities, humani-ties, social sciences and fine arts to a balanced University, and the University is much the better bet-ter for his concern. Placed in an unenviable position only a year ago is he president, acting president, or temporary president? Dr. Emergy nevertheless has performed well. Beyond his rebalancing of financial priorities, his budget battles with the legislature in defense of the University's importance to Utah, his willingness to talk to students, and his trimming of some vice-presidential vice-presidential deadwood all demonstrate Dr. Emery's concern with the academic quality of our University. Not that the administration has been perfect for twelve months. The high-handed way Student Health Service's budget was handled last spring, for example, shows there is a long way yet to go. But all in all it's been a good year under Emery. And now the search begins for a replacement. Hopefully our new president will have the same concern as Dr. Emery for the liberal and fine arts programs here. And, hopefully, students both inside and outside of ASUU will have a full voice in selecting the new chief executive. |
