Show Construction begins, date set for finish of wider intersection Construction on the widening of First South and its intersection in-tersection with University Street has begun. So far the tearing down of the Beta Theta Pi house and a brick wall across the street in front of the Ballet Studio are well under way. Contracts call for a completion date of Aug. 29 though extensions to Sept. 15 may be granted. The finished product will be four lanes of traffic all the way on First South, a widened intersection in-tersection with University Street, a more aligned road and less "hump" at the intersection. Included with this will be few other improvements at the intersection. in-tersection. A new drainage system, new water mains and realignment of the gas mams are also planned. The present three way stop will become stop signs only for north and southbound First South will no longer have the stop sign. A free right turn lane will allow northbound traffic to turn onto eastbound First South without stopping and merely merging with the other eastbound traffic. The same type of lane is being considered for eastbound traffic turning south on University Street. present plans call for no closing of the roadway during the construction, however, according to Heber Ball of Salt Lake City Traffic Engineering, the road would be closed if constructs got behind schedule. The University is paying only $5 500 towards this work, which Sudes all the work done on the southeast corner of the in tersection. The remaining work, being done by the city.
