Show Utfes enter national tennis meet BY KEVIN HALE Sports Staff Those of you who were lucky enough to see the NCAA tennis matches that were held last summer at the University, will soon have the opportunity to see more of the same high caliber of tennis. The National Indoor Amateur Championships will begin Thursday at the Salt Lake Tennis and Swimming Club. This tournament attracts many of the top amateurs from all around the country. Three of the four finalists in last year's NCAA matches and many of the top ranked players in the United States have entered. Tournament favorite is Jeff Borowiak of UCLA, who would like to make this meet his second win in Salt Lake City. You may recall that Borowiak took the singles crown at the NCAA last year, by edging out Roscoe Tanner in 3 straight sets. Other top amateurs who will be vying for honors are, Bob Mc-Kinely Mc-Kinely and Dick Stockton of Trinity, Roscoe Tanner of Stanford Stan-ford University and Southern Methodist's John Gardner. Gardner is an Australian who took the National Grass Court Amateur Championships last year, playing against many of the players who are entered here. This will be Gardner's first tournament in Salt Lake City. Although this is not a Western Athletic Conference tournament, there will be many players entered from colleges in our region. Members from Utah's team will include Bill Bennion, Bob Schovaers, Kent Woodard, Grant Smith, and Bob Young. F.D. Robbins the Ute's number one singles player, who just returned from a stint in the National Guard, will be trying to regain his winning form. Brigham Young University's Zdravko Mincek will add excitement excite-ment and depth to the tournament. tourna-ment. Others entered from the WAC who are expected to place strong are, John Fort of Arizona State University and Per Hegna of the University of Wyoming. Singles and doubles will be played with matches starting Thursday at 9:00 a.m., and running run-ning up until Sunday. Students will be admitted for $1 and general admission seats will be sold for $3.
