Show Gymnasts come close as Huskies pull out victory Top seeded gymnastics team in the country, University of Washington's Wash-ington's Huskies, met their Redskin Red-skin counterparts Friday in the University complex and pulled out a narrow victory in the last event, 157.10-155.40. Rated as easy favorites over Utah, the Huskies nearly consumed con-sumed more than they could swallow as Coach Larry Anderson's Ander-son's team matched the Huskies point for point through the first two events, floor exercise and still Mgs- Sergio Luna, Bob Montgomery Mont-gomery and Roger Haldeman turned in sterling performances those first two events to keep the meet fairly even. However, in the next two encounters en-counters the Ute gymnasts sparkled and took a one point advantage into the final event. Haldeman paced the Utes flawlessly flaw-lessly through the sidehorse while Wright and Montgomery placed in the 9.3 area in a range of ten to put the Utes on top 130.55-129.85 going into the high bar. High Bar Weakest Area Unfortunately for Utah, the high bar is their weakest area and they proved it by dropping over two points to Washington in the finale. The high bar is' perhaps Washingtons strongest event with NCAA Champion Yoshi Hayasaki specializing in it. Utah performed adequately, but Washington per-' formed flawlessly and nipped the Utes. Gymnastic Power Giving credit where its due, Utah proved itself one of the gymnastic powers in these United States. The fans appreciated the exquisite display of mind and muscle and the gymnasts appreciated appre-ciated the fans. All 1500 of them. Fans were everywhere, hanging from the basketball hoops in gym 101 of the complex, 'riding' the sidehorse when the competitors weren't, literally crawling up and down the walls in hopes of getting a better glimpse of the events. Someone goofed when they designated de-signated the crackerbox as the site of the meet. r ': . SERGIO LUNA -Ute gymnast |
