Show Debate squad victorious in Colorado meet The University debate squad began winter quarter with forensic victories. The squad's strongest showing of 1971 came at the 25th annual Pikes Peak Invitational Forensics Tournament held recently. At the Colorado College meet, one of the largest in the nation, the University took second place in Sweepstakes competition. The University of Northern Colorado at Greeley took first place. The University took second in senior division debate with the team of Marge Taylor and Carolyn Young. The teams of Joe Shaw and Dave Wood, Judd Cannon and Mike Weiler reached the octa-finals in senior division. The junior team of Rick Beard and Gary Green also reached the octa-finals. Marge Taylor claimed first place in Women's Oratory, Mike Weiler captured first in Men's Impromptu Speaking and Carolyn Young placed third in Women's Extemporaneous Speaking. Other University Finalists Other University members who were finalists in their events were Bob Thorup in Men's Impromptu, Marge Taylor in Women's Oral Interpretation and Carolyn Young in Women's Impromptu. Kris Heisel reached the semi-finals in Women's Impromptu and in Women's Ex-temp. Ex-temp. Dave Wood was a semi-finalist in Men's Extemp. Dr. Jack Rhodes, director of forensics stressed that the tournament was a total squad effort and that all participants performed per-formed very well. In other tournament competition, the teams of Joe Shaw and Lynn Merrell, Brad Bertoch and Bruce Jensen represented the University at Montana State in Bozeman. Joe Shaw was a finalist in Extemporaneous Speaking. The team of Judd Cannon and Mike Weiler reached the octafinals in Senior Debate at the University of Texas Tournament Tourna-ment in Austin before finally being defeated de-feated by the varsity team from the University of Houston. The three tournaments brought the University Uni-versity squad into competition with students stu-dents from 70 different colleges and universities around the country. |
